I went to Elementary school next to the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum (site of Palmer Memorial Institute). We toured it as kids. It sparked some of my earliest interests in history and, by extension, Civil Rights and education. Last time I drove by, people were early voting. It was awesome to see.

Historian Ida Jones told me that Charlotte Hawkins Brown’s Palmer Memorial Institute was one of four prominent schools for Black children founded and led by Black women educators during the Progressive Era. We talked about the vision those schools shared and what set Brown apart.
