importantly, like the KJ charles blog post on plagiarism suggests, mostly these people delude themselves into thinking everyone really kinda cheats like this, or there's no difference between what they do and really writing it all yourself, and they experience themselves as fully sincere

a couple years ago i had quite romantic feelings towards fandom as a whole and i thought there was no way that more than a handful of weirdos would plagiarise in fanfic because almost all the "returns" to posting it are social, which cheating would seem to undermine. now i think i am more sober

Anine is one of the people who worked to expose the research misconduct against trans people at Oslo University Hospital. Yesterday, she was told she is no longer on their waitlist to receive gender-affirming care. This is so obviously retaliatory, it's hard to put into words!

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.

I don't know how to say it without sounding like a dick but most people simply don't think like we do, regardless of politics or values. This is why, if the Harry Potter series is a success, under NO circumstances should anyone take it as the public's referendum on if they want trans genocide or not

it's possible, but studies of moves from state to state in the US indicate that tax is not a significant factor in where people live. an awful lot of rich people choose to live in the US's two highest state/local tax regions (NYC and California), because they are fun places to be rich in

I am in Cap Haitien interviewing people deported from the United States. I have been doing this kind of work for almost a decade and it literally does not get more dire than this. People have lost everything they built in the U.S. and are terrified and have no place to go or way to live.

Emphasizing: people I am speaking to are strong and have tremendous spirit. But they have been devastated. They mostly entered the U.S. legally, worked for several years, were detained (frequently illegally), arbitrarily deprived or denied status, treated brutally, and dropped here with nothing.

going to state the obvious even if it's impolite: Yujae has huge potential but most likely needs eating disorder treatment before she can show it. i came to this conclusion irl at Cranberry. i think this may be a factor in how she can do a gorgeous 3A then 3T straight into a wall.

I had never thought about how insurance for frats works, so I had to stare into space for a while when I read this: sorayachemaly.substack.com/p/33-underst...
Assault and sexual assault are so prevalent in the Greek system that insurers won’t insure fraternities. They are considered a high-risk class because of decades of litigation costs related to sexual assault claims, the second most common claim type for frats (assault and battery is the first). When frats do get coverage policies typically exclude crimes, explicitly citing sexual misconduct. Alcohol-related violations are also commonly excluded.

Because of this profile, fraternities have to self-insure, collectively funding through an entity like the Fraternity Risk Management Trust, an instrument members pay into. The amazing thing about this setup is that in the case of criminal findings, excluded from coverage, financial risks flow to individual men’s families’ homeowners insurance policies, not upstream to local fraternities or their national organizations.
