This is a nice article but I'm very disappointed to learn that the Bat Lord is not the new caretaker of the Cloisters. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/06/a...
New York Times headline reading "A Bat Lord Has Landed at the Cloisters. He'll Be Its Caretaker."

James Thurber, The Years with Ross.
Text:

BoB BENCHLEY sat down at a table in Tony's
one night, before the unlamented death of Prohibition, and found himself in the midst of a discussion about the comparative unendurability of writers and artists. Someone asked, "If two ships were sailing from New York tonight, one filled with writers and the other with artists, which would you get on?"
"Do I have to get on either one of them?" Benchley asked.
I told it to Ross the next day and he said, "You and Benchley don't know what you're talking about. You don't know how easy your life is. I have to get on both ships every goddam day."

Stop naming buildings (and streets, and parks, and ships, and mountains) after people
Eventually, inevitably, someone will decide that your well-meaning gesture was a terrible error.

Back in 2003 when I had the good fortune of working on this series, Wiseman's career was already monumental, and that was before he made another dozen movies. bampfa.org/program/fred... (A website "upgrade" left this archived page in ruins but I'm sharing anyway in a moment of nostalgic weakness)

Can't stop thinking about the two words my grandparents used over and over to describe the German forces in Vienna in spring 1938: “lächerlich” and “teuflisch.” Laughable and diabolical. Ridiculous and fiendish.

Cat: What makes a life worthwhile?

Girl: Improving OTHER lives.

Cat: What makes those lives worthwhile?
Girl: Working for other lives' comfort. Working for other lives' meaning

Cat: What makes those lives worthwhile?
Girl: Working to allow other lives to DETERMINE and ESTABLISH their own dignity.

Cat: What makes those lives worthwhile?
Girl: Working to make the world a BETTER PLACE for ALL people and animals and plants and minerals

Cat: What makes those lives worthwhile?
Girl: Holding back the HOWLING VOID

Cat: Still sounds like a ponzi scheme
Girl: We just need to find the next sucker

I've learned a lot by studying my grandparents' archives from 1930s Austria, but perhaps the most important lesson is that Putzi the cat's favorite food was banana

What a titanic force in film scholarship we have lost with the passing of David Bordwell. He was among the first to see the potential of blogging, and he used it to spread his love of film as art. And no one was kinder to fledgling writers. Deepest condolences to Kristin Thompson and his family.
