It's going to be a long march back home to our European friends. So much damage has been done. However, the best time to start is today and the next best day is tomorrow.

As I board the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki, I’m reminded yet again of three things about the EU: 1) You don’t sacrifice any of your national identity or culture by being part of the EU. Estonia remains Estonia. Finland remains Finland 2) Schengen is great. 3) Brexit was and is shit.

The media silence over the Island of Strangers speech seems to be part of an overall consensus that it’s impossible for people *not* to be against immigration. The media won’t even consider that there are people upset by xenophobia.

10 years of cost, red tape, business closures, lost opportunities, emboldened prejudice, national insecurity and social division. A total waste of our time, resources and patience. But refusing to face up to that has been the most dismal part. Political cowardice and dishonesty on an epic scale.

I know I’ve been getting some attacks on this, but there’s nothing progressive about strict immigration controls. Yes, some on the left have pushed for them over the years - hence Lexit - but that wasn’t progressive. ‘Workers of the world unite’ isn’t ’workers of England unite’.
