Are harp seals responsible for the stalled recovery of Atlantic cod?
Since Atlantic cod fisheries collapsed in the early 1990s, ecosystems have been less productive and have struggled to recover.

Postdoc publications and citations link to academic retention and faculty success Duan+ doi.org/10.1073/pnas... 60% of postdocs leave academia p(postdoc -> academia) increases with: publishing more highly cited papers location of postdoc training changing research from PhD, but not too much
Factors influencing the success of early career scientists. Panel (A) shows the average values of our success metric η for the same categories as Fig. 1B (those in these categories that stayed in academia after their postdocs). Panel (B) displays η as a function of the topical difference between the publications as a doctoral student and a postdoc measured by the Jensen–Shannon divergence (JSD) of the annotated disciplines of the publications. The smooth line is a fitted fourth-order polynomial. The vertical lines show the (equal sample number) bins (except for the zero divergence observations). For reference, in our case (with 19 topical categories), changing from publishing on only one topic to publishing on only another gives a JSD of 0.83. Panel (C) shows the average η value for physical mobility—whether the Ph.D. moved to another country, another university in the same country, or stayed at the same university. Finally, panel (D) shows a similar plot for different classes of postdoctoral trajectories—whether the move to or from a top-10 university or research institution, or stays in the top-10 versus other categories, and how these moves depend on the region of the Ph.D. granting institution—Europe, The United States, and Canada, the rest of the world.

Trust in scientists and their role in society across 68 countries @colognaviktoria.bsky.social + doi.org/10.1038/s415... Overall, trust in scientists is moderately high & people think scientists should engage with society and policy, but minority disagrees with policy engagement
Normative perceptions of scientists in society and policymaking using weighted response probabilities.

people tend to agree that scientists should engage in society and policymaking (grand mean, 3.64; s.d., 0.87; 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree). In the countries surveyed, a large majority (83%) agree that scientists should communicate about science with the public, particularly in African countries. Overall, only a minority disagree that scientists should actively advocate for specific policies (23%), communicate their findings to politicians (19%) and be more involved in the policymaking process (21%).

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.
