Are you tracking developments in #biodiversity monitoring and its applications? We wrote a paper on addressing the challenges: Data to Decisions: the Biodiversity Monitoring Standards Framework (BMSF). Creating a cycle of trust from field data to policy reports 🧵 ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...
The Biodiversity Monitoring Standards Framework is a linked sequence of steps defined by the standards that each step adopts within a set of well-defined needs, principles and ethical guidelines (center). Every monitoring workflow would achieve an overall standard rating (potentially tiered) based on the standards adopted in each step. The monitoring workflow is implemented (right) once the necessary resources, human capacity, technologies, and data architectures have been adopted. A tiered approach allows countries to start with simpler methods and progressively adopt more sophisticated ones as capacity grows. These standards need not be costly or infeasible to adopt, but they do need to be defined a priori to create trust and confidence in the trends reported.

How do human drivers shape ecosystem services and their interactions? The answer impacts policy and management. We used Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to model ecosystem service interactions as a causal network for data from many Quebec landscapes www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Using linear regression, based on data from 318 soil landscapes, if we assume that human activity intensity does not influence the relationship between livestock provisioning and bird-watching recreation (a), then we might conclude that there is no effect between these two services. However, when controlling for human activity intensity (b), a direct trade-off is found because human activity intensity positively influences both services.

New key finding: Landscapes of fragmented habitat have lower diversity, at all scales, than do unfragmented landscapes. Habitat fragmentation does not compensate for the loss of local (alpha) diversity by increasing the diversity among fragments (beta diversity). www.nature.com/articles/s41...
The figure explaining the contrasting outcomes for diversity and local and landscape scales in continuous vs. fragmented landscapes. The right column (panel d) shows the cases where increasing inter-fragment diversity (increasing beta diversity among fragments) compensates for loss of local (alpha) diversity results in an increase in regional (Gamma) diversity. Fragmentation is 'bad' for diversity when loss of alpha and beta diversity combine to cause landscape-wide declines in gamma diversity.
