Wondering if anyone knows of any on-site organizing near detention centers to connect non-English-speaking people who've been detained, moved across state lines, and then released in the middle of nowhere--in, for example, rural Texas or Louisiana--with translators, resources, ways to get back home?
Many of those released after questioning have been left on the streets of Texas without money and identification, which were confiscated by authorities. Family and friends have tried to help them make their way back home.

There's a prison revolt at a concentration camp in Texas in solidarity with Minneapolis:

Jazmine Ulloa

Hundreds of immigrant mothers and children detained at a South Texas facility on Saturday protested the killing of a 37-year-old man in Minneapolis, chanting "Let me out" and "Libertad," or "Liberty," according to an immigration lawyer who witnessed the demonstration.

Eric Lee, the lawyer, said he had been waiting for his client in the visitation area of the family detention center in Dilley, Tex., when detention officials abruptly asked him to leave. Once outside, he peered through a chain-link fence and saw hundreds of women and children walking out of the facility and chanting in protest.

Lee said his client later told him on the phone that he and other detainees were outraged over the latest killing in Minneapolis and the detention of Liam Conejo Ramos, the 5-year-old boy from Ecuador detained with his father in Minneapolis and sent to Texas.

They're emboldened by their movement confreres in ICE and CBP. In NYC the community education council members pushing anti-trans school policies are Moms for Liberty activists whose other pet projects are segregation in schools, anti-"CRT," and book bans. ICE raid footage is inspo for them.

One of dozens of mentions in Schulman's ACT UP history of the NYT's active role in minimizing the AIDS epidemic and dehumanizing gays and activists. From there to Judith Miller to "Screams Without Words" to literally supplying language for anti-trans legislation, this is who they've always been
A photo in Sarah Schulman's history of ACT UP, "Let the Record Show," of a 1989 ACT UP protest against the NYT. The caption quotes the leaflet distributed at the protest: "Why did the Times, in its June 29 editorial (Why Make AIDS Worse Than It Is?) dismiss a new federal study finding a 33% under-reportage of AIDS infections in the US? This callous editorial assured its general readership that AIDS will be over soon, once infected members of undesirable risk groups die off."

Joseph Weizenbaum, the creator of ELIZA, on questions regarding scientists' responsibility to the public
"There are as many ways to state these basic questions as there are starting points for coping with them. At bottom they are about nothing less than man's place in the universe. But I am professionally trained only in computer science, which is to say (in all seriousness) that I am extremely poorly educated; I can mount neither the competence, nor the courage, nor even the chutzpah, to write on the grand scale actually demanded. I therefore grapple with questions that couple more directly to the concerns I have expressed, and hope that their larger implications will emerge spontaneously."

Just intervened in a fight in my neighborhood park. 20 minutes of talking to both guys as they kept goading each other. Only thing that consistently cooled the temp was "It's not worth it"

One thing I've tried to prepare myself to do if I see this happening with no rapid response nearby: approach the person if possible & ask their full name + a phone number for a loved one, so at least someone knows what's happened. Easier said than done for many reasons, but it's what I've got.

and the weight we once / thought a burden turns out to form / the pulse of our life and the compass for our brain
Toward The Space Age by Mary Oliver

We must begin to catch hold of everything
around us, for nobody knows what we
may need. We have to carry along
the air, even; and the weight we once
thought a burden turns out to form
the pulse of our life and the compass for our brain.
Colors balance our fears, and existence
begins to clog unless our thoughts
can occur unwatched and let a fountain of essential silliness
out through our dreams.

And oh I hope we can still arrange
for the wind to blow, and occasionally
some kind of shock to occur, like rain,
and stray adventures no one cares about --
harmless love, immoderate guffaws on corners,
families crawling around the front room growling,
being bears in the piano cave.

Do you worry that directing commercials will influence your style?

First of all, I have no desire to create a unified style. For each of my films I am looking for the most suitable approach for the theme. The commercial work I do is completely different: advertising is devoted to what one sees, to what one shows; while in cinema the most beautiful is what you don't see, the abstract or intangible. As a film unfolds, the spectator takes into account all the things outside of the film itself, the physical parameters of.......the screen. The films that I like always have, in one way or another, this kind of beauty. Cinema conveys poetry; it's capable of revealing the invisible poetry that occurs in life itself; the lights, the colors, the bitter experiences of humans, their exchange of words, the state of the sky. Sometimes, it's a material poetry based on technical decisions: a camera movement or the musicality of a change in shot can conjure up this poetry. (From The World of Jia Zhangke)
