It is cheering to me to watch the white-throated sparrows in my back yard forage on the ground and then, when they get spooked by something, fly into the bush foliage of the Virgin’s Bower on the pergola. It’s shed its flowers since this photo, but still provides cover for these little birds.

A bushy expanse of vines climbs the corner posts and trellis of the pergola. In summer it had a profusion of white flowers shown here. Those have faded now, but the leaves remain to provide cover for the sparrows.

With fewer cup plant flowers this year (due to growing moth population) I expected fewer goldfinches during migration. Glad to see a nice little flock this morning, getting seeds from the more-abundant brown-eyed Susan plants as well. Hoping the downy woodpecker I see is getting some moth larvae.

Watching three squirrels clamber over the rather small maple tree in my boulevard. They are harvesting seeds from the most distant branches. One keeps watch as the neighborhood dogs get walked, thrashing its tail demonstrably.

It is being a nice thing about being retired that I don’t have any strict time commitments, so I can help friends and neighbors with various things almost always. Sometimes leaves me a bit harried, but it’s still a good feeling to be able to help out.
