I ought to have thought of that - and according to the reply above, you're absolutely right. It does have a grim humour about it which I'd like to think is unintentional considering the subject matter.

"La Martyre" - and I'm sorry but I don't know the artist. It clearly dates from the First World War - there's a German helmet on the piano and that appears to be a Red Cross nurse lying dead beside the enthusiastically performing Death. #31DaysOfHalloween #gothic #GreatWar

It's a pretty fair impersonation of Bocklin's own style. I rather like the idea of him being buried on his own Isle Of The Dead.

At Samhain it is believed that the dead return home, coming to seek hospitality and see how the living have gotten on. This leads to happy reunions at times, while in other cases, the disappointed dead bring the fright we associate with Halloween today. #WyrdWednesday

The folk tales never seem to feature women - just male farmhands, foolish youths etc. Most women would have more sense than to traipse off with fairies with the promise of food, drink or gold.

Beware of traipsing over the burial sites of the Nordic haugbùi, or “barrow-dwellers,” for the spirits are known for showing no mercy dispensing their specific form of punishment if disturbed to resurrection: Reciting poetry to trespassers. #WyrdWednesday 🖼️ The Merry Cemetery by Amrita Sher-Gil

These tales are a reminder that in medieval accounts of fairies are equated with the Dead. Even in later, more familiar folklore, they tend to live in a twilight world that exists under the earth (the same medium, of course, where you bury people).

In some Welsh (at least) stories, the fellow inveigled by the fairies is safe until he partakes of any food or drink offered him - then somehow he becomes part of their world. When he returns, his deadly old age catches up with him once he tastes normal food, this rendering him fatally mortal again.

It's a common in trope in #fairy lore that a man mysteriously vanishes and then returns centuries later. He has spent the time in the land of the #fairies but it seems just a few hours to him. Returning to the mortal world, he soon crumbles into the dust of the dead. #WyrdWednesday #folklore
My beloved copy of the 1880 first edition of 'British Goblins' by Wirt Sikes. In gilt and white inlay, the cover shows a man vanishing to nothingness as another seeks to embrace him.

#WyrdWednesday “Sometimes they come back” The Monkey's Paw" by W. W. Jacobs (1902) An elderly couple possess a talisman that will grant three wishes. They are warned there will be dire consequences if they use it. Foolishly they wish for money & receive it as compensation for the death of their son.
Illustration for "The Monkey's Paw" by Maurice Greiffenhagen. A elderly couple are in great distress. The father holds up the monkey’s paw to wish their son back in the grave.

In Norse folklore, draugr are malevolent animated corpses that savagely attack anyone who disturbs their burial mounds. They are envious of the living, yearning for life's simple pleasures, and can curse their enemies. The draugr inspired J. R. R. Tolkien's barrow-wights. 🎨Kim Holm #WyrdWednesday

The medieval English chronicler William of Newburgh recorded several 12th-century stories of corpses leaving their graves to terrorize communities. He even remarked that such cases were so numerous it would be difficult to record them all. Medieval England had a revenant problem. #WyrdWednesday
