Vintage-style Gothic artwork featuring a woman in a long white nightgown fleeing past a gnarled, leafless tree under a dark, dramatic sky. White serif text centered at the top of the image reads: "Ask your doctor if running screaming into the savage night might be right for you." A small copyright watermark reading "©ephemera.com" is visible in the bottom right corner.

"An ancient horror settled on the street, (...) To choke the summer's final breath complete In a dark sepulchre of winter's cold. And well I knew in that dead hour of night That autumn brought no simple change of year, But an old ice-god rising in his might To claim the world in desolation drear."

WHY do you fear me?
I am your friend. I but guide trav'lers
Rounding the bend-
Lead them to freedom
From time and age,
Help them start writing
On a new page.

Seek for me never,
Keep your course true-
When I am needed
I'll come to you,
Then I will show you
Roads without end-
Why do you fear me?
I am your friend.

The Bat was turned into several film adaptations and a novel. It pioneered the trope of setting comedic mysteries in old, dark houses which seem to be haunted. #illustration #coverart Unsurprisingly, it also inspired Batman.
