The developers built them to take advantage of the Airbnb market and they built small unliveable apartments that nobody would really want to buy and live in full-time. They should take a haircut and lower their prices, not be bailed out by government.

This is a bad idea. If they are vacant, then they are too expensive for the market to buy. Why would my tax dollars go pay prices that the market won’t bear? Leave them vacant, let the price drop until they are affordable. Anything else is a tax-payer bailout. Don’t give money to rich people.

There are much better ways to spend that money. Vancouver has the Non-Market Housing Development & Operations team. Their explicit role is to build affordable housing. Give them the money instead of developers. Don’t just give money to rich people.
