one of my art history professors once pointed out that donatello was an early renaissance sculptor while michelangelo, da vinci, and raphael were all high renaissance painters, and it would have made a lot more sense for the fourth ninja turtle to be titian. this has always stuck with me

All I can think of:
the flag of brittany [horizontal black and white stripes with the top left corner filled with an ermine-tail pattern] with the black stripes replaced with the colours from the rainbow pride flag.

Victoria raises a huge chunk from payroll tax, I think, which is great: it's broad-based like income taxes, but it's also effectively a wage subsidy for smaller businesses [balancing against economies of scale to even the playing field] and is the easiest tax in the world to collect.

Also: the Doctor Blake Mysteries is set in ballarat in the late 50s and never includes a shot of a tram. Virtually every photo of the city I've seen before the network was closed in 71 has a tram in it, but I guess the TV show didn't have the budget to build a 25km tram network.

[most modern japanese western-fantasy runs early-modern to as late as mid-victorian, technology-equivalent, but bookworm's technology base is older / more primative and *usually* it is pretty good at this.]

In Ascendance of a Bookworm, set in a late-medieval fantasy world, our main characters, who are poor children, make a wooden box using nails. Bad enough, they should be using wooden pegs, but the anime represents them with modern round-wire nails instead of the period-correct tapered square ones.

The point is, if you _just_ vote people out then it's all upside for them: heads they get to steal money or pii or to [verb] the [epithet]s, tails they lose an election and go back to where they were. People who chose to do crimes have to be made worse off, to "suffer": crimes need to be punished.

Everyone in creative work for hire knows most of the job is clients asking you for something bad and stupid and you figuring out how to make something completely different while convincing them it's what they asked for. The AI era means everyone gets to see what clients actually want

Cars in Magic Knight Rayearth, a thread: Zagato Zagato is a design house rather than a manufacturer, so I’ll go with the roughly contemporary 1989 Alfa Romeo SZ as an example. Mamoru in Sailor Moon drives one, too.

Moribito guardian of the spirit has been filmed twice, once at ~9.5 hours less credits [26ep anime] and once at 4 hrs [4 ep LA]. The anime is better-paced, but this is a dense book; normal anime production is 1-4.5 hours / volume.

[higher inflation targets would make it easier for govts to run higher output, but "govt is getting output lower than it wants" isn't the big constraint here.
000
Louis Patterson @theboatend.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
The govt is going to put us into a recession. The RBA uses interest rates to control inflation; the govt uses fiscal policy to control output. Or is supposed to, the problem is, people keep on electing govts that run fiscal policy too tight and output too low.

the whole point of bart was to do a clean-sheet design. It turns out that, golly, rail is the technical optimum, but nobody could prove that until the 70s transport studies. I've read one of the reports, the whole dancing around "we've just spent a lot to prove the old technology is best" is fun.

Louis Patterson @theboatend.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
So the thing about BART is, it's not a train, it's a clean-sheet super-SF transportation system like something out of thunderbirds, that kinda resembles a train simply/purely on account of the victorians getting it right. Sometimes [see below] this is more obvious.

Honestly, slayers is one of the handful of anime that makes more rather than less sense when you remember for example that Lina is *supposed* to be fifteen years old. [even younger for the movies! maybe thirteen or fourteen!]

Weirdly, BBC and ITV have identified and solved a core issue, but have not sought to apply it to scripted comedy or drama. Game shows dominate schedules in part because they have a single indoor set, a small cast, and a premise that generates tension/drama. Do that but with fiction.

Lotteries are a form of investment, think of it as stochastic savings. Not a *good* investment but all the others require the ability to keep cash / cards physically secure, reliable counterparties &c. Hadn't thought of it but heavy inflation would make cash savings worse too.

Perfect example though of how corrupting tariffs are. Every town & business becomes dependent on little tariff carve outs, meaning that buying influence with Senators becomes mandatory to stay in business. The tariff is the mother of trusts!!!

As Marx wrote in the 18th brumaire, fundamentally a sequel is a reactionary enterprise and thus doomed, unless it can move beyond its source material and become its own thing responsive to the present rather than the past.
