Serenity was released 21 years ago today. When a canceled series got the chance to have not only an epilogue, but one on the big screen... 🤯 Cool space chase. That was four months after the release of Revenge of the Sith and the Battle of Coruscant. We were really spoiled.

One of my highlights of visiting the National Museum of the US Air Force the other week was seeing the Ryan X-13 Vertijet. I've been fascinated/appalled by it since seeing it in Reaching For The Skies as a kid. This is what happens when you let engineers problem solve in production. 😉

On my first big overseas client conference, I was at a dinner seated next to a drunk client who kept trying to fondle me under the table. I was young, distressed, and had no idea what to do. I moved my legs as far away from him as I could, moving into the space of the man next to me, who then started patting my legs! The Regional Manager was a French woman who caught my eye, gestured for me to go to the bathroom and when I came back had switched chairs with me. What happed next was epic. A few minutes after I sat back down, she raised her hand with his hand captured in hers and announced loudly "Does anyone know whose hand this is? I found it in my lap." There was dead silence at the table. She threw his hand back at him and said calmly "next time I pick it up with my fork." Then she started a new conversational thread and things moved on. After the meeting she found me, gave me a hug, and said seriously "Never be afraid to make some noise. It is their shame, not yours."

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

To be clear, this thing was reprinted in English 3 times between June and September 1953... There has always been a market for this stuff. I would hope that John Ewing, the RCAF officer who became enamoured with Konke and translated this, made some coin out of kickstarting all these books.

IWM Caption: West Indians in the Royal Air Force: A Trinidad accountant, Jellicoe Scoon, recently arrived in England as a Royal Air Force recruit. Aircraftman Scoon was accepted as a pilot, completed elementary flying school training with at least fifty hours to his credit, and was then sent to Service Flying Training School. IWM (CH 5213)

Another, more circular storm system is at lower centre, and is a grey–greenish colour. The background swirls are various shades of grey to blue; small, white features dot the scene.

First review I've seen and ICL I enjoyed reading this. "The price is justified for a that like no other merits to be nominated as the definitive work on this topic." Translation in ALT @mike-bechthold.bsky.social @theaviation.show @alanallport.bsky.social @rjhammond215.bsky.social
Breaking Rommel by Michele Palermo, Marco de Poli and Andreas Biermann. IBN Editore, Rome 2026. Euro 39
The Chronicles of the air war in North Africa and the Mediterranean were recounted in a complete manner in a series of books in English, Mediterranean Air War, by Christopher Shores together with various other authors including the Italians Malizia and Massimello.

The current book, in English language, concentrates on a period of the conflict, July 1942, when the Axis troops under Rommel's leadership sought to break through at El Alamein to reach Alexandria, but were stopped by the English. The seesaw of the ground combat was reflected also in the air, in which both sides sought, without success, superiority over the battlefield, with hundreds of aeral sorties each day and the loss of over 200 planes between both sides.

This is a colossal work of 490 pages that presents the events day by day with an absolute precision thanks to work in the historical archives of the United Kingdom, completely, and those of other nations involved, including the Italian war diaries at the Historical Office of the Italian Air Force.

Each day we therefore have the ground operations, providing the general frame and a detailed presentation of all encounters in the air, hour by hour, was ample quotes from comet reports and tables that compile the data and provide an overview of the missions. The events of this are not described day by day but practically hour by hour. At the end of the book there are various tables, recounting comets the orders of battle, the numbers of missions and the losses.

This isn't light reading, but it is admirable. It is not heavily illustrated, but there are sufficient numbers of photos and various German maps of the period together with other documents. The price is justified for a book that like no other merits to be considered the definitive work on the subject.
