Hey, remember when the Panama Papers were released and they showed how basically every wealthy person on the planet was avoiding taxes by offshoring their money and nothing was done about it except the reporter who broke the story was murdered with a car bomb?

Could the West please decide: Do countries have a right to defend themselves or not? Are civilians near military command centres fair targets or not? Can you bomb hospitals with tunnels under them or not? Is criticizing a country the same as hating a religion or not?

Four perfect flowers of glaucous honeysuckle (lonicera dioica)
Four orange flowers of glaucus honeysuckle emerging with perfect symmetry in four cardinal directions. The long flowers are shown in contrast against the dark green leaves below them. Each flower has a trumpet-like shape which begins as a pale peach color and extends outward turning orange and red toward the pedals. The anther s of each flower extend prominently outward on fine yellow filaments.

March in Alberta still seems pretty dead and wintry, but there's green out here if you look for it!
Many long thin leaves of two penstemon (beard tongues), growing low under the brown and grey of last year's grassland. The penstemon leaves are light sage green with purple, waxy, and cupped upwards as they emerge from tight rosettes. The vibrant leaves of arctostaphylos uva-ursi (bearberry) with a mixture of green, yellow, and red colours, surrounded by dry, dormant grasses. Feathery green leaves of Geum triflorum (prairie smoke) grow flat against the soil under dry plant matterGrey-green clusters of tiny spine-like leaves of phlox hoodie (spiny phlox) on an otherwise bone-dry mound of clay soil

Been scouting out some unobserved spots for spring botany walks. Enjoying the prairie views and identifying the remnants of last year's plant populations... but I can't wait until things really get growing again. This spot is on an undeveloped road allowance with great remnant prairie ecology.
A view of the Alberta prairies, currently dry and brown in early spring. Looking down from a coulee into a river valley, populations of trees and grass are visible with stark sandstone cliffs in the distance and the mountains subtly visible on the horizon under a blue sky.

51% of Canadians believe the government should approach the United States as a threat or as an enemy. Far fewer now see it as a friend or ally. Canadians have a less favourable view of the US than India, a country which murdered Canadian citizens on Canadian soil.
As of March 2025, 13% of Canadians see the United States as an enemy and another 38% see it as a potential threat.

Here's some nice Oxytropis borealis viscida (Sticky Locoweed) growing on a bit of sand in the ditch. Early June. Remnant native Alberta ecology.
A small population of sticky locoweed growing in sand near a tree root. Leaves are compound and quite fine, not unlike a carrot. About a dozen flower stalks with clusters of flowers that are a vivid mix of purple, pink, and blueaOne flower cluster from above, grasped by a hand for scale. The cluster is just wider than a thumb, with a dozen pealike blue, pink, purple and white flowers radiating out. The interior of the cluster shows the sticky glands at the base of each flower.

Here's some lovely native prairie orchids growing just south of Calgary last June. Corallorhiza striata (Striped coralroot) for some reason I caught myself thinking about this little population again, which is still living sleepily under the snow, waiting for the warmth of spring (me too)
A close photo of the flowers of a striped coral root orchid. Flowers have a yellow and beer red center with white and pink striped petals. A photo of four flower stalks of the coral root orchid, growing directly from a bed of leaves underneath a tree. Behind is it Boulder a tree and open grassland.
