I like Carpenter, I do. But much as with Lana Del Rey you’re never gonna catch me denying that she’s leaning on certain aesthetics to get ahead because it appeals to execs, to the right, and to people who love those aesthetics but can’t bear to think it’s not progressive.

NYT list is not exclusively based on book sales and is largely a gatekeeping mechanism that loosely considers books by Blk authors with a machine supporting them. This is not conjecture - I ran a $1M campaign in 2024 called All The Black Girls Are Bestsellers to prove that it’s not the numbers. The books on our list outsold 14/15 books that week & none made the list.
