Bird Set-up Photography (courtesy of hidden grape jelly [not jam!]). Hoping to see these beauties return in a few weeks! Grape jelly obviously does not attract Red-Shouldered Hawks or Hummers. The hawk was loudly screeching, I think, for a rat, or trying to attract a mate.
Allen's Hummingbird on our deck who obviously doesn't eat grape jelly.Male Black-headed Grosbeak. Can always tell when they're in town by their song. They love the hummers' sugar water, so I had to widen the ports on the feeder."Mommy O" Female Hooded Oriole perched on our deck. We didn't know hooded orioles inhabited our neighborhood until I asked the owner of our local bird supply store to identify an oriole in a photo (not this one), and she advised us to put out grape jelly, which did the job in about 5 min!Red-shouldered Hawk perched on the functional but "ugly branch" on our deck, calling out for a mate, demanding a rodent, or "visiting" our little dog!

Acorn Woodpecker posing exactly where he was supposed to (grape-jelly guided). Taken 20 years ago with a Nikon D70 when I first switched, with trepidation, to digital. Applied latest PS tweaks to extent possible.
Male Acorn Woodpecker who landed between flowers as hoped for. There's a cropped-out dish of grape jelly that helped guide his landing. Except for drilling holes in the deck railing and some roofing, these woodies have been gracing our house year-round since the late '90s. Can't wait for the little ones this spring.

Love this HGTV concept.
Post by vampireapologist

“I'm the host of a yet another HGTV show about renovating houses for rich people & when the couple comes to see their new beachfront property I lead them to the door in blindfolds and then I have them remove them and open their front door and behind it is nothing.
The entire house is gone.
I tell them I used the budget to restore the crucial sand dunes ecosystem that existed there before. Look, I say. There's native costal strawberry!
The wife asks if this is a joke. The husband starts crying. I tell them both this was in the waiver they signed.
They leave. I get ready for my next property.”

What if it could be Fantail Friday?? Rufous Fantails (Chamoru: na'abak/chichirika) are perfect birds. I've banded hundreds as part of a long-term research project on Saipan with @instbirdpop.bsky.social. They fill a similar niche there to warblers, flitting about gleaning insects off of leaves 🎨🐡🦉🧪
Birds are weighed at the banding station by restricting movement inside a film canister. This keeps them calm and safe and lasts only moments, and then they are quickly released. Weight tells us about the bird's health, and can be monitored over time as the bird is recaptured.Rufous Fantail held briefly in the photographer's grip for documentation before release. The long, brilliant tail is thought to help them startle insects to capture, a behavior also seen in American Redstarts.Illustration of a Rufous Fantail on a neutral background, in a calm posture with feathers held slightly fluffed out and tail fanned.

Scientifically speaking: birds are weird little dudes. Let's talk about "anting" & why all the cool birds at school are doing it. The history goes back to ornithologist John James Audubon, who documented young wild turkeys "wallowing" in anthills in 1831.
A group of all the really cool turkeys from school gathering around behind the cafeteria, passing around ants where the teachers can't watch them do it.
