First Page

It’s a beautiful night to die.

From the balcony, Fay Soon stares down at the celebration: the silken gowns, the crystal chalices, the laughter resounding like shattered glass. It’s the end of semester which means yet another overpriced soirée for Chang’E National University’s elite. After seven years here, the scene is hardly unfamiliar. She studies the expanse of the university gardens.

There’s a cyclical nature to it. Young and eager minds unfurling: the undergraduates, loquacious in their attempts to impress one another, each conversation, each gesture, carefully selected like the finest blossoms in a greenhouse.

There are those on the other end of the cycle too. Senescence. The doctoral candidates wilting in the shadows. Hoping for their ideas to be transfigured by wind or water or even the sorghum wine they’re cradling in their hands.

But no matter how many times Fay experiences it, she doesn’t think she’ll ever get used to the spectacle.

No one in the outer circle speaks like that, not in those sprawling, unmanicured streets. It’s opulent; it’s hypnotizing. It’s—

—a complete and utter waste of funds.

@thelialao

Epigraph

As every flower fades and as all youth
Departs, so life at every stage,
So every virtue, so our grasp of truth,
Blooms in its day and may not last forever

…

We must prepare for parting and leave-taking
Or else remain the slaves of permanence.

💀 A girl is marked for death, but which? ⚔️ Twin sisters in opposing factions, so was it betrayal? 🧩 Pilots of magical mech must escape for the truth 🤝 They can only do so while dancing together, but can childhood friends Nadiya and Amalea connect before it's too late? #W #📖 #LGBT #YA #F #BluePit

9 moodboard concepts for "sisters of the light upon the moon, unsung." nadiya with ocean-like water surrounding her in the first square, spilt red roses on concrete on the second, a fencer with a mask and a sword swishing right toward the roses on the third, a meteor shower with the words 'something unspoken' on the fourth, an asian girl with staring at a rainbowy red light arc by the river while at a higher part of the town on the fifth, red lamps in the sixth, a dark shadowed silhoutte flinging back and looking up toward the red evening's moon in the seventh, a sunset-lit ocean on the eigth, and an emo or gothic asian girl staring with a haunted gaze and eerie pillars with rainbow static and large purple flower petals on the eight.

SHERLOCK HOLMES with BEES When a singer with ties to royalty vanishes, it's up to detective Arthur North to find her. As he digs, he uncovers a plot to place his people, the bee-like zizzun, in the crown's crosshairs. Can he uncover their connection before it's too late? #BluePit #📖 #W #F #M #YA

A collage consisting of various cut out images:
- An illustration of Sherlock Holmes in his classic deerstalker cap and cloak smokes his pipe in the bottom left
- A honey bee gathers nectar from a flower in the bottom middle.
- Four macarons sit stacked in the bottom right corner.
- Up the right side is a stalk of purple foxgloves.
- The background is split between a pile of old newspapers and a dark alley lit by lamps and neon signs.
- Red stage curtains frame the entire piece.
- Five bee cut-outs (from two images of honey bees, flipped and rotated to various angles) fly around the top of the image.

Excerpt “Who are you?” she asks. “My name is Melody, I’m Lyra’s younger sister,” I say. “You two are identical.” I wish I could ask Lyra if she’s okay with Annie knowing everything. Better yet, I wish I could make her explain it. Her girlfriend, her problem. But I’m here alone, Annie is the one who saw Lyra last, and I want any information she can give me. It’s not like I could pretend I’m Lyra and ask why she ran out last night. I kind of need to tell her. I’ve never had to explain us. I don’t know where to start. It’ll be easier since she can already sense Lyra and I are different people. Somehow. But it’s still going to sound insane to a normal person. “I’m six years younger than Lyra. She died when we were kids, and I… I don’t know what I did but I saved her soul. I kept it.” I press my hand against my chest, careful to avoid the burn. “We’ve shared this body—my body—for over twenty years.”
