This is a new deep-field image from JWST, designed to look for the point of origin of a fast radio burst. The bright, multi-point features are stars in the Milky Way. Everything else is an entire galaxy.
The dark of space, featuring a handful of bright, nearby stars, and altogether too many galaxies beyond.

I usually do something like this to introduce the product rule (coming to my class on Thursday!), with Snow White as a main character, but I hadn’t thought of drawing attention to the units.

I didn’t appreciate the Euclidean algorithm sufficiently until after graduate school, I think. Not that I didn’t use it, but I underestimated its power-to-simplicity ratio, which is something I’ve been considering more and more in mathematics as I get older.

I’m going to use this word to mean what I need it to (it’s not that exciting, basically just keeping track of some attaching maps in graphs), but I encourage others to take the term and use it freely until it has a standard meaning. Clearly it’s a fun word!

Chromodromy would mean "these colors run" which. Could work.

Joshua Bowman @thalesdisciple.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
In that case, I might go with “chromatic monodromy” instead, to go along with “principal monodromy” elsewhere in the paper.

I just thought of an even worse word that now I’m tempted to use: “chromomorphism.”

(f) chaos: what I allow changes every semester Mostly no notes, however. Unless I feel they would benefit from preparing a card or sheet of notes to bring in. In multivariable calc, I provide formulas, but not until we get to integration. All the vector and derivative stuff they have to remember.

Seriously @howiehua.bsky.social I would love to see a video where you use this to find the gcd of two polynomials.

Joshua Bowman @thalesdisciple.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I’m sure I learned this (the symbolic version) at some point as an undergrad. It didn’t stick until I had to teach it in algebra, however. Before that I always found the gcd through prime factorizations. But this is so powerful! You don’t need to know prime numbers! And it works for polynomials too!

This is a SMALL version of the largest JWST image released so far—of IC 348, a star-forming region about 1,000 lightyears away. Open up the image and marvel in the incredible beauty even in our galactic neighbourhood. This is what it looks like when stars are born.
From the source: "A star-forming region. It is blanketed in thick clouds of gas and dust, millions of kilometres across, that form swirling patterns. Bright stars are scattered throughout the clouds, with the densest cluster situated in the centre of the scene. Each is crowned with six long points created by the optics of the telescope’s mirrors. In the upper right, a couple of hidden stars blast out long, glowing jets of material."

33 years ago today, the Stranger stepped onto the dock of Myst Island for the first time. We can still hear the water splashing against the pilings.
The dock of Myst Island from the original version of the game. A wooden dock ends at a spiral staircase that leads up to giant gears on a hillside. A ship is sunk in the water on the right, and parts of buildings are visible on the left.
