🎉 Exciting news, our newest paper is officially out in #ApplEnvironMicrobiol #AEM🔬! We investigated how an Acinetobacter gene found in goose feces 💩🦆 can contribute to colistin #AntibioticResistance in E. coli. #microsky croftsmicrolab.org 👇 Read the paper: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

A functionally selected Acinetobacter sp. phosphoethanolamine transferase gene from the goose fecal microbiome confers colistin resistance in E. coli | Applied and Environmental Microbiology
Colistin is an important antibiotic of last resort, and increasing resistance to this drug via mobile phosphoethanolamine transferase genes, such as mcr-1, threatens its clinical utility. Given the discovery of mcr-1 in pigs, the ability of animals to act as vectors in the spread of colistin resistance is alarming. We show here that functionally selected Acinetobacter phosphoethanolamine transferase genes from the goose microbiome have the ability to confer clinical levels of colistin resistance when transferred into E. coli. While the genes are annotated as eptA homologs, closer study of these genes suggests that they may be mobilized within the Acinetobacter genus, suggesting that they may be mcr genes of concern instead.

Giving a webinar on #BlueSoup this Friday, in case anyone wants to pop in during their lunch!
A promotional flyer for a webinar in the CSU Bioinformatics Webinar Series. On the left side, it shows the date and time: “26 Sep | 12 PM PST.” It includes instructions to join via Zoom with Meeting ID: 886 2442 3158 and a QR code above. On the right, there is a photo of Dr. Elinne Becket, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University San Marcos, sitting outdoors with plants and trees in the background. Below, the title of the talk is displayed: “The Soup that Blue up Twitter.” The description explains that Dr. Becket will discuss the shared curiosity of science, open science, and a story from February 2023 when leftover beef soup prepared by her mom turned bright blue. Scientists and people on Twitter collaborated to investigate, leading to a global effort among microbiologists and chemists. Many people talk about the "Golden Age of Antibiotics", but I hadn't seen it visualized properly. Just how many types of antibiotics were discovered during that time? So, I visualized it myself!
A timeline titled "The Golden Age of Antibiotics" shows when each antibiotic drug class was first available for medical use, with example antibiotics labeled. Classes are color-coded by their source: actinomycetes, other bacteria, fungi, or synthetic. Milestones include the first antibiotics (arsphenamines in 1910), as well as the discovery of many actinomycetes-derived antibiotics, such as streptomycin, and sulfonamides, penicillins, and tetracyclines. Data: Hutchings, Truman, Wilkinson (2019). Created by Saloni Dattani for Our World in Data.
