If ever you end up in early Cretaceous Brazil, do your best to not be bitten by Thalassodromeus. It would not be fun. Figure from this pterosaur bite force study @rv-pegas.bsky.social and colleagues: doi.org/10.1093/zoolinnean/zlaa163
Bar graph displaying the estimated absolute bite forces (A) and relative bite force quotient (B) for several pterosaurs. Top to bottom, they are Nyctosaurus, Pteranodon, Anhanguera, Tropeognathus, Dsungaripterus, Tapejara, Caupedactylus, Tupuxuara, and Thalassodromeus. A skull silhouette of each pterosaur is displayed next to each bar. Of these, Thalassodromeus has by far the highest absolute bite force, at 150 N, and the second highest bite force quotient after Dsungaripterus. Fig. 20 of Pêgas et al., 2021

I'm working on #paleoart of #synapsids today, so here're two battling Arsinoitherium to mark the occasion. They are nothing to do with the species I'm drawing, other than the fact both subjects share a great deal of heft and some nifty headgear. #sciart
Two rhinoceros-like animals wrestle with elaborate facial weapson. They are bulky, brown animals with four facial horns: two larger arcing up from their nasal regions, two smaller pointing upwards backwards over the eye. They are backlit in oche lighting and surrounded by clouds of dust generated by their battle. Sparse manes are discenible along their backs, but their skin is otherwise unornamented. Speculative fat pads between the shoulders and heads give their silhouettes a distinctive profile. Small trees and low vegetation are visible in shadow.

eratosaurus emerges from a forest.

This illustration depicts a Ceratosaurus dentisulcatus emerging from a forest into an arid plain. Coated in scars and ticks this individual still sports bright crests and a healthy weight. Maybe they sought cover from the sun to rest, maybe eying potential prey nearby, or even a potential rival.

Ceratosaurus is one of my favorite dinosaurs and often comes to my mind. Like deinonychus I tend to do rough sketches of them but never really do much outside of that. It’s nice to have something of Ceratosaurus on my page to show that :)

Third ancient Greek vase from an alternative timeline with less destructive humanity. In this religious scene, Athene, goddess of wisdom, carries a giant Cretan owl, one of the extinct endemic Cretan animals. They are trailed by little owls (Athene noctua), which is Athene’s symbol in real life.
Illustration mimicking those on ancient Greek vases with orange characters on a black background. It’s showing the goddess Athene as a woman clothed in flowing fabric with snakes reaching out from her back. She’s walking from left to right, holding her arms in front of her, a very large Cretan owl sitting on her hands and two little owls following them. There is also a young olive tree planted in a decorative pot, another of Athene’s symbols. The same illustration of goddess Athene, three owls and an olive tree as in the previous image, now depicted on an ancient Greek two-handled amphora.

here's today's #Paleostream sketches!!! today we sketched Bathornis, Quinkana, Acanthostega, and Megaloceros #AusPalaeo
a Bathornis jumps into the air and uses its wings to glide a small distance, it's in a large field of lush grass.

Bathornis was a medium sized bird with a hooked bill and long legs, much like its living relative the seriema.a Quinkana rests with only its head above the surface of the water, the water is covered in floating plants.

Quinkana is an australian crocodilian from an extinct lineage that didn't look too dissimilar to modern crocodilians.an Acanthostega travels across the bottom of a vernal pool, using its primitive limbs to save energy. dead Sphenophyllum plants lay around the vernal pool's floor. the day is overcast and the surface of the water reflects the cloudy sky, silhouettes of Calamites trees can be seen in the bottom right, while the top left shows silhouettes of fern fronds.

Acanthostega is a stem-tetrapod that looked like a salamander with no neck and webbed feet.

Sphenophyllum is an extinct vine-like plant that grew on the bottom of the forest floor, their appearance is vaguely similar to horsetails.

Calamites are extinct relatives of horsetails that looked like christmas trees and grew to about 50 to 60 metres tall.a female Megaloceros mounts another female Megaloceros in a grassy field, the edge of a forest can be seen in the background.

Megaloceros is a massive extinct deer, males possessed gigantic antlers which is what the genus is famous for.
