In high school, kids switch classes and hop from subject to subject multiple times a day. 🔄 So when lessons span over many days, ninth-grade English teacher Alicia Bechard prompts her students to revisit key ideas from the day before and refocus with a group recall activity. 🧵1/6

I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +

I think we often have the wrong idea around expertise in education. Expertise is not just “I know this really well so you should listen to me.” It also is, more importantly, “I know this very well so I’m better at listening to you.”

It's not JUST literacy skills It's not JUST reading stamina It's not JUST "the screens" It's not JUST curriculum choices It's not JUST homework culture It's not JUST over-scheduled students It's not JUST adults not reading, either It's complicated. Pretending otherwise doesn't help.

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.

A screenshot of an author byline and text excerpt on a dark background. In the top left corner is a small black-and-white headshot of a man next to the byline "By Jeremy W. Peters". Below his name is a short bio reading, "Jeremy Peters has written about the evolution of the L.G.B.T.Q. movement for more than a decade.". Underneath the bio is the date "Nov. 26, 2024". The main, larger text below the date reads: "To get on the wrong side of transgender activists is often to endure their unsparing criticism.".
