🚨Latest Climate Matters: Every single congressional district in the country has warmed since 1970. And human-caused climate change was responsible for 91% of the warming in each district, on-average.

This isn't a knock on how you use it though! Because I know you provide that broader context.

Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
To me it's more like, why do we need another metric? Like you said, it's EN + CC. That's all you need. IMO, ONI is at the bottom. Not only bad at representing El Nino but creates misunderstanding of EN. It's not treated as connected to climate change. And it's overall confusing for people.
100
Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Again 100% on the same page here, and it's one thing I've been noting in any interviews I give. I'd just rather explicitly say El Nino (RONI) + climate change than bringing ONI into it to avoid confusion. This has the benefit, to me, of framing impacts during non-El Nino years too.
020
Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Totally agree. But ONI doesn't communicate that climate change signal well. Heck, most of the time I've seen ONI being used, it's "WOW this El Nino is OFF THE CHARTS" with no mention of broader warming.
110
Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Well, to me, it depends on if you're talking about measuring the strength of El Nino vs. the impact of El Nino + climate change. Unless ONI captures some bit of global ocean warmth/moisture unrelated to RONI or climate change that significantly impacts the hydrological cycle.

How can we expect anyone to properly prepare for current or future climate extremes if we don't even mention climate change. This El Nino isn't happening in a vacuum!
030
Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
We need to be improving resilience/early warning systems for climate disasters every year, not just El Nino years. This El Nino will end. But similar levels of extremes will occur somewhere EVERY YEAR. And climate change is right there making those disasters worse. El Nino or no El Nino.

And I know that makes the article longer. So in cases where El Nino is clearly atmospherically and ocean-wise in that area., like now. I think the way you wrote it makes sense. My big annoyance is with the day-to-day horse race of taking daily values and declaring it the strongest ever.

Tom Di Liberto @tdiliberto.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think this is totally fine. If I was being pedantic, I'd say you should note how long it's been above that threshold, and/or how it's unlikely that it's going to drop below. But I also don't think you should have to wait until the month (or 3 months) are over to say it's very strong.

Also again the reason why we'll be breaking temperature records is mostly because of climate change. El Nino is not leading to an increase in temperature everywhere! The big signal from El Nino is over the Pacific. The rest of the global red...climate change (overly simplified but you get it)

To whom it may concern, if 2026 or 2027 end up as the hottest year on record, the main reason is climate change. Not El Nino. Mentioning only El Nino would be like covering a gold medal 4x100 relay team and only mentioning the sprinter who went last.
