This new paper provides economic evidence for Humboldt's ideal of uniting research and teaching. Students exposed to courses closer to the research frontier are more likely to complete their degrees, earn higher grades, attend graduate school, and achieve higher earnings later on.

North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, held local elections today. Support for AfD up but at 15% well below party's national polling. And lower among the young: 5th place on 11% among under-25s, who also delivered a smaller swing towards the party than did older generations.

The EU forest sink is getting much weaker, with some major revisions based on updated data, particularly from Germany. LULUCF in 2020 was -270MtCO2, but is now -220MtCO2 (approx the same in 2010). The EU has a target of -300MtCO2! See details of the German revision: bsky.app/profile/robb... 2/2

My survey class on the history of science is essentially about the social conditions required for science. The final lecture is always about how the US became the dominant nation for research in the 2nd half of the 20th century, and how it in retrospect it may be seen as an anomalous "Golden Age."
