My cartoon for this week’s @newscientist.bsky.social
Panel 1.

A quote in a starry sky:

“We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars. - Oscar Wilde”

Below, people are lying in the gutter. One is looking through a telescope.

Panel 2.

“Guys, astronomy is amazing.” Says the figure with a telescope ”You should all give it a try.” To which others reply “Sure. Why not?”.

Panel 3.

Now the quote reads:

“We are all in the gutter but we are looking at the stars.”

All the people are looking through telescopes.

Panel 4.

“This is great! Apart from being in the gutter.” Says one of the people. Another replies ”Let’s go to the observatory!” and leads the way.

Panel 5.

The quote now reads:

“We are all looking at the stars but some of us are in the gutter.”

Everyone is in the observatory except two figures who lie in the gutter looking up through their telescopes.

Panel 6.

The original telescope bearer leans out of the window and asks “Why are you guys still in the gutter?” and they reply “We don’t like too much change”.

Two explorers have emerged from the jungle into a clearing where two angry-looking men in white coats confront them and stand before easels covered in calculations and formulas. One explorer says nervously "Just back away very quietly and don't look at the flipcharts: they are at their most dangerous when protecting their theories".

My cartoon for this week’s Guardian Books. p.s. latest book Is REVENGE OF THE LIBRARIANS www.tomgauld.com/comic-books-v2
A Comic strip.

Panel 1: On the horizon a large passenger ship sinks into the sea. A woman sits on a raft, "if only there was space for us both!" she says as she leans back on a large, well-stocked bookcase. Her lover, clinging to the raft replies "Maybe if we lode the bookcase...?"

Panel 2. "My poor darling!" says the woman "Oh, how I wish there was something I could do to help you". The lover, now sunk further into the water continues "... or even just empty one of the shelves?"

Panel 3. The lover is now neck-deep in the water and the raft has been carried away on the tide. "Fate can be so cruel" muses the woman, without looking up from the book that she is now reading "Farewell my love. I'll never forget you."

A recent cartoon for New Scientist
A scientist stands in a panelled sci-fi room. In front of her is a tool box and a ladder that an orange-overalled technician has climbed to access a hole in the ceiling. The scientist asks "Is it a wiring problem?'. "umm, I think it's a bit more complicated than that." says the technician who’s top half is now emerging behind the scientist from a hole in the floor, while her lower half is still visible in front of the scientist.

excerpt from tweet by @ArnallLabrador reads A person, an object, a random sandwich, a mood is not your spirit animal.
Stop doing this. Please. It's been more than enough YEARS of Indigenous peoples telling you and educating you on how wrong this is for you all not to get it.

A figure stands on a tiny, sandy desert island with one palm tree, a wooden crate, and lots of books. A large container ship has arrived and two figures look down. The castaway is saying to them “can you swing by again in a month or two? I’ve got a few more books I’d like to read”.

It reminds me of an incident that happened at my journal this year, and I thought I’d share some insights (for what it’s worth)
