In August, Michael Reynolds, executive publisher at Europa Editions, an independent press in New York best known for publishing Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Quartet of novels, told a room full of booksellers at the New Voices New Rooms conference in Baltimore he was excited about the possibilities for AI in translation and “seemed baffled by critiques of it,” according to attendees. Europa Editions is already controversial among literary circles for leaving the names of its human (for now) translators off the covers of its books.

Well-sourced, eye-opening (but in hindsight, unsurprising) piece from Adam. The main use of AI by publishers appears to be publicity/marketing. I would like to explain why this is a bad use from the perspective of someone who gets pitched dozens of books a week for coverage.

The comic that just landed on my desk is EVERYTHING. It's got a Deaf protagonist, mythological creatures, and beautiful art. It's the kind of book that would have meant the world to me as a hard-of-hearing kid. I'm so grateful I get to translate it.

Continuing posting on making comics accessible for blind/low vision readers, this part of our comic shows 6 possible ways of translating just a single panel, to really illustrate how one size doesn’t fit all needs. Accessibility is messy & an artistic act itself! spinweaveandcut.com/mitcomic/
