Ayveness was a land of decadence and intrigue. It was a place where an appropriate scheme could advance anyone into the nobility. Because prestige and power could be earned from any strata of society, in theory everyone had a chance.
But it was a zero-sum game, power could only be gained by taking it from others. So, in practice, it just meant the no one could ever be trusted, and everyone was trying to figure out how to climb over you to get to the top.
Av’ry didn’t like what that constant state of competition did to people. He hadn’t liked what it had done to him.
Taevyn Fox was the first person who had ever really made him feel safe. She didn’t want anything from him, she didn’t try to use him to better her station, like he had tried to do to her. Which was why he wasn’t ready to give up on her. Not yet.

Tycho's eyes fluttered open, the smell of sweat, and all too familiar body wash filled his senses. He couldn't move... immediately being squeezed as he tried, held closer to rough, gritty, thin fur. "Drilltooth." Tycho mumbled out tiredly. "Yeah?" The squirrel asked, clearly more awake then than tanuki was. "Move your arm a bit." He requested, the squirrel did. Tycho dug himself deeper into the embrace, closing his eyes, and snuggling the squirrel tighter. "No fight for freedom this morning?" Drilltooth asked, Tycho hummed in acknowledgement. "Something happen?"
"Yeah. Just... a long day yesterday."
"Gotcha." Drilltooth tucked his head over the tanuki's, closing his own eyes.

The hit to the ground knocked the wind out of him, as he winced, feeling her grip on his arm. “I’ll take that as a yes. For the record, I let you do that.” He said, before coughing. She quickly got off him to grab some water. Despite the long sip, his coughing fit wouldn’t stop. Eve felt fear tingle through her body, and a wave of cold sweat went down her back. She came to his side and caressed his back. A knot of guilt twisted her chest and plugged her throat. As if sensing her guilt, Michael took Eve’s hand and leaned in to kiss her cheek.

“Oh, you’ll love it! I have a view where you can see a sliver of the ocean, there’s a street that leads right to it! I have a pull-out couch you can use and extra blankets and pillows some friends left there for me! I have a fridge and extra food and running water! It’ll be great!”
“Len,” Chen says as if to caution the bubbly redhead.
“Oh Chen, I don’t think Erika here will be any trouble, I’ve been with her all morning and she’s been nothing but sweet, if a bit confused!”
“No, Len. I don’t think your assigned landlord will like that very much. You know overcrowding restrictions are being tightened.”

Tycho noted as he put the tray under his arm. "I'm sorry to hear that, Daisy." Tycho bowed slightly to the bee, she giggled. "What a ring to my weary antenna... I like how you say it." She hummed as he picked up the teapot and began to pour a cup. "Pour yourself one too." Dahlia suddenly spoke up,"I couldn't do that, Miss Dahl-"
"Daisy."
"Miss Daisy."
"Just Daisy, and you can easily do it. Go fetch a tea cup, and sit with me. I want company, and I don't want to make it a demand. That'd just be sad." Dahlia repeated her request, Tycho set the tray by the empty seat, then stood up. "Okay, okay..." Reached into his sleeve and produced a leaf changing it into a teacup setting it on the table. "Fascinating trick up close." Dahlia commented as Tycho poured his own cup. "It's just second nature, and basic magic." Tycho noted with a small smile. "But it's still so extraordinary. My magic is limited to..." The bee hovered her hand over her teacup and the tea emerged from the cup hovering just above it in an orb. "Well... basic water magic. I dont have much time to practice anything else." She noted as she directed the tea back to the cup, splashing the napkin a bit. "And even then... I'm obviously not good with it." She pulled the stains from the cloth. "That's a pretty good trick there." Tycho noted, Dahlia huffed at the comment. "I wish." She muttered, "My family made me learn it to get wine out of dresses and suits." She noted, Tycho hummed quietly picking up his tea and sipping.

"May I ask you a few things, Tycho?" Dahlia suddenly asked as the tanuki was looking out into the garden. "Of course." He nodded as he looked to the bee. "What do you think of the manor?" She asked, Tycho looked over his shoulder to it. "It's a lovely little place, cozy enough. Not my cuppa tea for what I'd want out of life... but to each their own." Tycho noted, when he noticed the bee running a finger across the rim of her teacup. "It was my grandfathers..."

I wasn't planning on updating this more... but I did. Small touch-ups and showing how much control Samira has over her power. #Art

She moved faster than Tycho expected, he still caught her strike with his blade... but just barely, and she struck with more force than he expected. She was fast on her feet with her wings of honey. Samira seemed caught off guard, too, as her blade began to destabilize, melting from its fossilized amber form to raw honey... some of sticking to the Tanuki's long blade. "I always sensed a flow of mana to the divine treasure. I never thought it was taking from you..." Samira commented, holding her melting sword up to eye level. "Much more that it could take from others. This will be an interesting bout." After that comment, Tycho noticed the raw honey coating his sword. "Don't worry. I'm not going to use it against you... not that I think I could as long as it's touching that leaf."

“I know, I know, it was stupid. I should have told you right away. But I thought I could handle it myself and I didn’t want to put you in danger.”
“Danger?”
“This guy…you don’t know him, he’s…” Fox hesitated. She wanted to tell him everything. To tell him that REDACTED and that they were all in an impossible amount of trouble, but they were not alone. This wasn’t something she could discuss in front of outsiders. She was going to have enough trouble convincing Av’ry.
She settled on a half-truth, for now. “…Very powerful. And crafty. If he thought you were trying to interfere with his plans for me, I can’t predict what he would do.”
“So, this is you trying to protect me? Sensational, Fox. It’s working out real great.” He was clearly angry with her now, and she couldn’t blame him. “Look at where we are. Look at what is happening here.”
“I did try to tell you a couple of times, if you recall.”
“Void take it, Fox.” Av’ry rubbed his face. “You call that trying? You need to stop doing this. We are partners. How am I supposed to help if you keep hiding things from me?”

Her wings vibrated weakly, only shaking off more honey than really giving her more lift as she jumped, it didn't stop her assault though as her melting blade struck his, pushing him back with even more force than before. Tycho caught a glimpse of Samira's fingers twitch as she backed up again... she was tempted to use her other hand. At least he could take another point in his endurance category... not that it would matter with how things were going.

“This isn’t possible.” He shook his head emphatically. “I must be…”
“Dead or hallucinating?” She smiled. “You aren’t, I promise.”
“Well, it has to be one of the two,” he retorted.
“No, it doesn’t. I can explain this. Really.” She offered him her hand. “I was planning to sort of ease you into it, but you did insist. Now, can we please just sit down and talk?”
Reluctantly, Av’ry took her hand and got to his feet, but he didn’t sit. Instead, he stepped up closer to the woman, studying her face intently.
Finally, Mikiva could stand it no longer. “Av’ry, who in the gods’ names is this woman?”
He laughed, an unnaturally high, tight sound that bordered on hysterical. “Well, I never thought I would say these words again, but here it goes: Mikiva Ayron, allow me to introduce my late partner, Taevyn Fox.”
