Something Queer in the Library. there's a jumpscare reveal at one point, where you turn the page and WEREWOLF in the doorway on the facing page and it had me scared for literal decades.

School music programs are getting absolutely bodied by tariffs, per @nytimes.com: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/02/b...
The effective tariff rate on instruments in June was about 13 percent, said Cullen Hendrix, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. That was down from a peak of nearly 24 percent last September but more than twice as high as before Mr. Trump’s second term.
Band and orchestral instruments have been hit the hardest, he said. In the second quarter of this year, imports of instruments were down nearly 20 percent from the same period in 2024. Imports of orchestral string instruments, including violins, violas and cellos, dropped 50 percent. Brass instruments fell 43 percent.

“It’s hitting the horns, it’s hitting the strings, it’s hitting the percussion,” Mr. Hendrix said. “All of those things combined are kind of sapping the available pool of tools that we can provide these children to begin their journey.”

we tracked months of rent payments to an estimated 13,000 families. the expected cost of rehousing those families, had they entered eviction, would be north of $218 million dollars. keeping them housed cost around $38-40 million

Ah, the good old days.
NORDEN AND BAGSLATE
Sudden death of a girl -- The coroner, John Molesworth, Esq, held an inquest on Thursday, at the Bridge Inn, Mill Bridge, near Greenbooth, on the body of Jane Ann Heys, aged 8 years, daughter of Robert Heys. Deceased was employed at the factory as a piercer, and was at work at 6 o'clock on Tuesday morning. At about 7 o'clock she became sick, and her father, who was there, sent her out of the mill. She went home, and on her father going to his meals she still seemed ill. In the evening she appeared better, and at half-past 9 laid down on the couch. In about an hour afterwards she was attached with a fit, and her father called in a neighbor named Ann Whitaker, but the poor child expired in about 10 minutes. No medical man was called in. The verdict of the jury was death from natural causes.

Every now and then I'll read all of a romance writer's backlist and never mind the kinks, WOW can descriptive tics really show up on the 5th book in a series. Also, Grace Burrowes seems to have a personal goal of using the word inchoate in every single one of her books.

Surely the winds also follow the mandate of heaven, so if we're having weather problems, it does seem like a reasonable first step. If this doesn't fix the problem, we'll never talk about the idea again, and if it does fix it, we'll never need talk about it to again.

The two best ridiculous stories about capitalism which are going to be true any minute now are Kukla Boogie Moon by Eliot Fintushel (Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet #13) and the Robert Rankin story? in which a guy teaches himself to sleep with his eyes open to earn credits from the tv.
