I know it’s practically blasphemy to say so, but society should not require everyone to work. Some people can’t. Some people shouldn’t. Some people contribute more by *not* working than they would by working. Work isn’t that important.

I haven't invented languages but I do have a WIP where the adolescents of a fictional town have a deeply peculiar slang that seems to have developed at least partly from the eccentric nursery rhymes of the region. #SFFChat

My favourite invented language is the degraded English that constitutes the entire book and the voice of MC (and all characters speak it) in Russell Hoban’s dystopian Riddley Walker. Apparently he kept all these cards with bits of language on it to ensure consistency as he was writing.

I write magical realism and dystopian fiction. I lived in Spain yesrs ago and speak some Spanish - I quite often have Spanish speaking secondary characters in my fiction. I am trying to learn Arabic for my WIP as a secondary character is Iraqi.

It's #IndiePressDay today which is about raising the profile of small presses. Why? Because their output is incredible: Compared to the big publishers, Indies are more likely to take a risk on an experimental manuscript or more difficult subjects, and we need that freedom of speech more than ever!

For #textureTuesday here’s a #monochrome set of ripped posters in varying states of decay, on four sides of the octagonal stone column at the top of Middle Meadow Walk in #edinburgh
Square high contrast monochrome photo of a stone column, grooves running vertically at each side. Between is the remains of several bill posters, torn and faded now completely illegible but with a pleasing textured look A similar photo, but with a distinct horizontal course between the stone blocks cutting across the middle, with torn remains of another poster.Another similar photo. This poster is a bit more intact but the top layer of print is ripped off, again rendering it illegible, an irregularly shaped white scrap with a small hint of a drawing in the middle Fourth shot in the series, with only a scrap of paper at the top l, on the right side someone has drawn a downwards pointing arrow with a circle around it

We are thrilled to reveal the cover of Rosie Oliver's new book, A Truth Beyond Sense, created by Alex Storer. Out on May 15th. Hear a reading from Rosie at Satellite 9 in Glasgow later in May.
Cover by Alex Storer, of A Truth Beyond Sense by Rosie Oliver. Grey, textured rock background, around the edges foliage and plants suggestive of greenhouses used to grow food. In the middle, a hole, apparently looking into a tunnel with stalactites and stalagmites, a bright light source at the far end permeates the tunnel with a greenish light, a figure in a space suit struggling to walk between the stalagmites.
