Goodbye Scotland, see you in 2 weeks. For now I’m on the first train of many , to explore another slice of Europe. Bonus beer, it is Friday after all.
View out of a train window of the coastline of South-east Scotland. There is rough grass above a rocky coastline and the great sea beyond. The sky is grey with various layers of clouds. A small glass of beer next to the can. It is Hop on Board Golden Ale for LNER, and the can says Celebrating 10 years on board.

Solved something that's been bugging me for a while this morning: confirmed that the Beatrice Demonstration turbines have not yet been decommissioned, despite the Moray West windfarm being built around them. Was able to find them on @CopernicusEU #Sentinel2 […] [Original post on mastodon.scot]
A slightly blurry satellite image of open sea with white smudges that are actually offshore wind turbines. A yellow marker pin in the middle sits between the locations of Beatrice Demonstration turbines A and B, while to the north of them at the top of the image is the rectangular blob of the decommissioned Beatrice AD oil platform. The other wind turbines just visible are part of the Moray West wind farm.
It is not very interesting visually, but the information in the image is useful.

Years of stains dripping down the wall give it an almost barcode-like striped quality.A fairly grim, shaded concrete staircase. Rusty white metal railings catch the limited sunlight so they shine brightly against the otherwise gloomy surroundings.A clear blue sky over a very still, and equally blue, North Sea. One of the big crane ships was back in Leith the other day, so I hustled on down there with my camera and... got there just AFTER the golden evening sun disappeared behind the clouds on the horizon. D'oh! Still, big things by the shore... Fun anyway! […] [Original post on mastodon.scot]
An enormous crane ship, parked up on the shore by a little lighthouse. It catches the last of the warm evening sun, and the clouds behind it are beginning to turn pink in the light of the sunset.

This is the Seaway Alfa Lift, and it can sail around the world, lifting items up to 3,000 tons in weight, up to 108m into the air. An extraordinary vessel.A dockside filled with the widely-dispersed industrial bits and pieces you might expect on any modern dockside. There's a three-storey building which presumably houses some kind of control or operations centre, and then a series of lower sheds, various vehicles, a lot of flood lights...

Towering over them all are a series of three-legged bright yellow structures. They're all 'jacket foundations' and are up to 95m tall. They will all sit underwater in the north sea once they're installed, each holding a transition piece and then a tower and then a wind turbine above them. The scale of the things is quite incredible.A fisherman on a dockside, facing away from us. In the distance, across the body of water, are a couple of three-legged bright yellow structures.
