One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

I mean privacy aside (and this is /me/ saying "privacy aside" y'all), this sounds like literally the worst coffee meeting in the history of coffee meetings. I don't know any of these people and I know everything I need to know about them from this paragraph and I am already miserable by proxy.
During a coffee meeting, a Limitless pendant hung from Wilson’s chest; his Meta Ray-Bans were in their case. Beside him, Pat Santiago, founder of Accelr8, a coliving startup, had a Buddi pinned to his collar that he uses to gather intel at networking parties and pitch nights. No Cap processes the data he captures with his collar recorder to surface early-stage investments, Santiago explained. “The AI can see patterns that we can’t.”

I feel like every single day I need to post a reminder: if you ask an LLM about itself it DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ITS INNER WORKINGS and WILL NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ACTUALLY ABOUT ITSELF. It just (as it always does) will make up some plausible sounding answer.

I don't think there's much use in asking users of a social network to behave differently — platforms are too big for norms like that, people mostly aren't posting to debate — but similar charges of meanness/insularity accompanied Twitter's rise, and arguably described a reason people *liked* it!

great point from @maxread.info regarding "regarding white genocide," and one that relates to the weird ChatGPT sycophancy thing from the other week: crude interventions like this break the AI illusion maxread.substack.com/p/regarding-...
Which means that Musk's attempts to control and manipulate his A.I. may ultimately work against his interests: They open up a political, rather than a mystical, understanding of artificial intelligence. An A.I. that works like magic can have a spooky persuasive power, but an A.I. we know how to control should be subject to the same suspicion (not to mention political contestation) as any newspaper or cable channel. A.I. deployed as a propaganda machine is a much more familiar technology than A.I. deployed as an oracle. For those of us less attracted to (or convinced by) an anti-political mystic machine god, answering questions like "why did computer do that?" and "how to make computer do exactly what I want?" are of paramount importance, even if they also open up the possibility of more subtle manipulations.

There is some good news. Like Mr. Rogers says, look to the helpers, such as @teslatakedown.com. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Tesla’s first-quarter vehicle deliveries were far below even JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst Ryan Brinkman’s pessimistic estimate, “confirming the unprecedented brand damage we had earlier feared,” he said in a report Friday.

The sales report “causes us to think that — if anything — we may have underestimated the degree of consumer reaction,” Brinkman wrote.

I think about this a lot www.programmablemutter.com/p/why-jonath...
We live in a climate, where once people are Internet famous, they get rapid and large scale attention. Some of them like it, and/or can make careers from it. They keep on pressing the button for that dopamine hit or increase in engagement, and if they aren’t careful, they end up becoming caricatures of themselves.

In short: we live in a media ecology that creates incentives for Internet famous people to become crude approximations of themselves if they want to keep on being Internet famous. Some of them play to their crowd. Some of them embrace the role of Bold Contrarian Truthteller (playing to one crowd, while outraging another). Both tend to play up what gets attention. Both have incentives to double down on error rather than admitting it.

Note that it's Franzen, George RR Martin, and <authors> taking legal action against LLMs training on their work. It's not publishers. Publishers are staying silent and biding their time. Authors and publishers' interests are NOT aligned on generative AI, just as actors and studios aren't.
