Abstract: The short canonical tract entitled De ratione matrimonii, dating to the late eighth or early ninth century, offers straightforward rules on marriage drawn from a variety of authoritative texts. Its enduring appeal is evinced by the survival of at least twenty-three manuscript witnesses from the early ninth to the twelfth century, uninfluenced by important developments regarding marriage within Christian society during that period. Despite its potential to shed light on fundamental thoughts on the topic of marriage within Christian society between the eighth and twelfth centuries, this short tract has escaped the close attention of modern scholars. This article presents the tract, describes its context and character and provides its first critical edition with an English translation. An examination of the text
reveals its dependence on a peculiar version of the Irish Collectio canonum Hibernensis, offering insights into the development of this important early medieval canonical collection. In addition, the tract is a rare example of a set of pragmatic guidelines for early medieval societies, through its focus on practical rather than doctrinal norms about starting, living in, and ending a marriage. The study of the
mostly fragmentary witnesses to the text not only sheds light on medieval concerns about rightful marriage but also reveals the conscious editorial choices made by individual scholars and copyists throughout this period.

UNITED KINGDOM, FRANCE, GERMANY, ITALY, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY AND CANADA
The Israeli Government's decision to publish construction tenders for the
E1 settlement project is unacceptable. The international community has long opposed this settlement expansion, and has voiced their grave concerns privately and publicly. The E1 settlement will undermine the prospect of the two-state solution by driving a wedge through the West Bank and harming the territorial contiguity of the Palestinian Territories.
International law is clear that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal. This is the position of the international community reaffirmed by the United Nations Security Council.
At a time of grave instability in the West Bank with unprecedented levels of violence by settlers against civilians, and serious restrictions on the Palestinian economy, this decision is even more concerning.
We urge the Government of Israel to retract these plans immediately and end its expansion of settlements in the West Bank. Not only will they take us further from peace, but they further undermine Israel's international standing.
Businesses should not consider bidding for construction tenders. They should be aware of legal and reputational consequences including the risk of involving themselves in serious breaches of international law.
We reiterate our commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution. We will continue to act in its interest.

The Social Life of Early Medieval Normative Texts

This series of sessions examines how such norms were developed, reinforced, and established across various medieval textual and non-textual genres. Historians of different stripes are invited to address the interaction of norms and social practice in the (early) Middle Ages. These inquiries may focus on manuscript-based and legal sources from, among others, canon law, penitentials, and capitularies. Contributions from scholars working with (historical) narrative, visual, and artistic materials are also welcome. Submissions from the field of Digital Humanities that address methodological issues related to the study of early medieval norms are particularly encouraged.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to: the nachleben of Roman law; early medieval canonical collections within their manuscript contexts; the development of specific norms in penitential regulations; shaping medieval communities and social cohesion through rules and regulations; norms in hagiographical sources and their subsequent reception; the emergence of gendered rules in early medieval history; liturgical representations of normativity and meaning; and depictions of socialization in medieval images, artworks, and objects.
