i think the big data center backlash has a lot to do with technology getting worse, costing more, building a surveillance state, destroying the environment, owned by a class of wealthy elite that coalesced behind the fascist regime that made clear they’d sacrifice humanity for their own power growth

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

I have also been asked: who is looking after your children while you are at this meeting? Are you planning on wearing makeup for your seminar? Are you planning on following your spouse for your next job? When will you have children? Why do you need a lab coat that fits your pregnant belly?

I get notifications for the kids school and my work email and it’s always on silent. I also put on DND in the gym and turn off all work notifications when out of office. Even when other peoples phones constantly ping it makes me stress. I don’t know how people do it.

I haven’t had notifications on my phone in a decade. A list of exactly five people can break through my DND if they call twice. This freaks 1) millennials 2) Gen Z 3) students out to no end. I don’t know how we ever thought this was okay but then again I’m old.

Relevant to today's conversation about AI's inherent sexism, here's an email from cognitive psychologist and early AI theorist Roger Schank, arguing to Epstein that women can't be truly intelligent, because they care too much about what other people think.

Subject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence
intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed
(this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature)
it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what
thinking and feeling about her
hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why

As noted many times before, prejudicial beliefs & assumptions about disabled & neurodivergent people, BIPOC populations, women, & LGBTQIA+ people have formed the basis of the data which has been used to train "A.I." health systems, & we know those prejudices get reproduced…

…Frankly when it comes to GPT in healthcare, the possibility of being subjected to a system built out of & trained on large rafts of the "natural language" people on the internet tend to use to talk about the needs of BIPOC, Disabled, LGBTQ, & Femme folx sounds horrifying.

@1a Imagine integrating a) that system which reliably told the ethnicity of patients from x-rays, b) that system which consistently misdiagnosed signs of illness in Black patients, & c) a chat system trained on examples of how Dr's tend to talk about Black patients to relay diagnoses Screenshot of a post in a twitter archive reading:

Dr Damien P Williams Warned You About Exactly This

@Wolven

@1a Automated assessment tools read women's and Black people's pain incorrectly; disability assessment systems are improperly calibrated based on old presuppositions about disabled lived experience, resulting in negative health outcomes and negative impacts on benefits allocations;…

…and "A.I." mental health tools can have higher proportions of adverse outcomes for neurodivergent populations.

Scientists have discovered that men with larger penises are not only more attractive to women, they are also deemed more threatening to men, which is “the first experimental evidence that males assess rivals’ fighting ability and attractiveness to females based partly on a rival’s penis size,” according to a study published in PLOS Biology on Thursday. “In humans, height and body shape are well known to influence attractiveness, but penis size has rarely been tested alongside these traits in a controlled, experimental setup,” said Upama Aich, a behavioral and evolutionary biologist at the University of Western Australia who led the study, in an email to 404 Media.
