Faraday 2013–2026 🐈 I am so sad to say my little faceplanter has planted his last face. Faraday was a beautiful and highly extroverted cat who loved food, cuddling people & RuPhos (whether they invited it or not), invading almost all my WFH meetings, and above all else, chaos. He will be missed.

A growing body of research is putting the ovary in a new light, not as an egg factory with an expiration date, but as an organ that shapes women’s health long after the fertile years have passed.

because of the closed switch extinction coefficient, in the former case you see a pink shell around a colorless center (not seen); in the latter case, you just see the comparatively colorless bulk as excited molecules at the surface are quickly transported to the unilluminated center and relax

i haven’t read the paper but one way to get that figure image is to simply expose the photoswitch to uv/blue light which generates the pink color. With a stirbar at a low-ish setting, flow is laminar at the fluid at the edge of vial is continuously exposed. With shaking, bulk is exposed…

A journal cover with multiple puns on it. The name of the journal is CowMooCow. formerly Bull. Bull Chem Soc.

This is the special No-bull edition. Cover story is Rotexans: New Frontiers in Mooterials Science. By Fraser Stockyard. The cover art is a bull with a cylophane of some sorts wrapped around it ( a paly on rotaxanes).

Other storied on the cover: RED OX Redefined: New Heiference electrodes for organic chemistry
New cattle lists for Suzuki Mooyaura Reaction

Woodward Hoofman Revisited.

This was an explosion of groanworthy punnyful delight - it honestly has never been beaten. Unless you count the Journal of organo meatallics.....

plausible sequence of events is that the student was working with some kind of mercury-containing reaction that could hypothetically generate dimethyl mercury, spilled some on self, and presented to ER as a precaution

OK #chemsky folks, this just keeps getting more bizarre source: emergency.mit.net
Offices across campus have been responding to a reported hazardous material incident involving a single individual in a chemistry laboratory. The Institute became aware of the matter after the individual, a graduate student, self-reported to a local emergency room and claimed to have synthesized dimethyl mercury, a compound that is not authorized as part of their research program. Emerging information calls into question whether this compound was in fact synthesized. We are also able to disclose, with the student’s permission, that while the student remains under medical supervision, their initial blood test result, which was received today, shows no sign of exposure to mercury.
