Finished Baron Wenckheim's Homecoming (Krasznahorkai) today - it was a tough read. As it sat with me on the flight back from CPH today, I began to think about the layers of meaning (or moreover, lack of meaning)- and began to see it in an ecological context- biosphere collapse.

Journalists need to stop describing these incidents in terms implying software has agency and intent. It does not. The people who created a faulty and dangerous product are the ones responsible for whatever happens, and must be held to account, with punitive financial penalties for damage done.

Honestly now is a really good time to stop eating red meat. There is just so much cruelty in its production, as well as environmental damage. You don't have to be vegetarian or vegan, but let's maybe just continue to reduce harm wherever we can.

In the "Prose I've read and been blown away by" category we have The Language of Liars by S.L. Huang. Just holy shit this novella. It's bleak, and sad, thoughtful, brilliant, and magical, and a love letter to language nerds. Such world building, too. Holy crap is this a great read.

Lifesigns are not the same across different stages of the emergence of life on a planet. An early prebiotic will not have the same biosignatures as a more mature one in which life has taken hold. #Worldbuilding 🧪 Link: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.25205…

Evolution of biosignature properties in the prebiotic and biotic world. Assuming some biochemical processes and products emerged prior to the OoL, and could have continued increasing in molecular complexity and specificity after life emerged, then their diagnostic properties as “biosignatures” would change depending on the stage of life’s evolution. For example: Lipids may have emerged prebiotically as simple fatty acids, with post-OoL reaching some threshold of association with other biopolymers, then further increasing in specificity and functionality to what is observed for extant life. Prebiotic membranes (e.g., micelles, mineral pores) likely predate cells and membranes increased in functionality (e.g., bilayer exchange) over life history. Some degree of chiral enrichment could have emerged prebiotically and homochirality has persisted in all biochemistry across the tree of life. Simple peptides could have existed prebiotically and later evolved some functions and coassociation with other biopolymers (e.g., nucleotide oligomers) beginning prebiotically and continuing to today.

So… a colleague has started using GPT to make scientific infographics for LinkedIn and they are full of errors and weird typos. I pointed It out to him as soon as I caught it and he “deleted and reposted” with a fixed version which looks… exactly the same. 🤦‍♂️ what more can I do for the guy?

Some other reasons to not eat beef: - cows are sentient w/ emotions & pro-social, shouldn’t be raised in confinement & killed for our protein addiction - animal ag + upstream crops to feed them destroy natural ecosystems + major CO2 sources - non-meat foods are more plentiful + delicious than ever
