If you have to run past rightful condemnation of war crimes or even ethnic cleansing to instead claim the willful attempt to murder a whole people, and you do so in a conflict in which the number of deaths -- including combatants -- is exceeded by births, then yeah, you've gone there.

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

It annoys me greatly how easy it would have been for everything to be okay. Not perfect, not even great, but just 5/10 "I can slog through a day in undisturbed mediocrity without the Health Secretary declaring soap causes autism while the president literally shitposts about his war from the toilet."

Yep Max Weber saw this as one of the two possibilities of pursuing a politics rooted entirely on principles and morality. You were either doomed to irrelevance because you could not make the compromises necessary to atain power or you would use the moral cause to excuse any and all sins and crimes

Yeah, I really think we as a society spend too much time debating the nuances of A- ideas vs. B+ ideas while the F ideas just go unchallenged.

Good example of the dynamic on here, which is not that the site has "pro-AI" and "anti-AI" factions, but that even acknowledging the existence of a massive field of ubiquitous new technologies is verboten except via hysterical, belligerent ignorance. It's a pure cultural norm untethered to reality.

On the contrary, I think the idea that there is some golden past that we should return to is precisely what fascists exploit to seize power. The world is complicated, there are problems, but America of 2024 was the best of all Americas to live in, for most groups of people.

It is very important that we are able to have public conversations about the economy that are based on high quality quantitative data. Letting a few loud assholes shut that down because the facts hurt their feelings is bad, even when the loud assholes in question have marginalized identities.
