If the phrase "hand waving" occurs with end-of-line hyphenation ("hand-", then "waving" on the next line), did the author mean to write "hand-waving" (hyphenated) or "handwaving" (no spaces)? The latter form is discouraged, but I think it does occur sometimes in published work.

Wake up, babe, new argument for mathematical realism just dropped
Reddit post. Title reads "If mathematical objects are abstract (specifically, can't causally interact with the material world), how come I can still hate working with vector spaces?" Body of post reads "Sometimes when I'm working on a math problem and realize it's about vector spaces, it makes me want to stop since I hate linear algebra. Isn't that technically an abstract object (vector spaces) having an effect on personal reality (my emotional state)? or does 'not casually interacting' mean something more nuanced?"

Everyone has his ideal, and most often one becomes its caricature. My ideal has always been a stout, fat basement dweller. I recall this figure from my earliest childhood, when he stood there in his basement door in the afternoon light and smoked his pipe—indeed, I am actually a caricature—Pap. III B 180:7 n.d., 1841-42

Imagine you're an ancient Greek musician just trying to maximize your expressive possibilities and expand the range of your instrument by adding another string to your seven-string lyre, and some stodgy-ass conservative bureaucrats fine you for it.
ext reads, "To the conservatively trained ears of the Argives, alterations like these were so offensive that they assessed with fines those musicians who presumed to tamper with the hepptachord's proper nature: [Indented quote begins] In ancient times, then, since their prime concern was with character, people valued above all the dignity and simplicity which was a feature of ancient music. Thus the Argives are said to have once laid down a penalty for breaches in the rules of music, and to have imposed a fine on the first man who tried to use more than the seven strings normally current among them and who attempted to modulate into Mixolydian."

Just realized that my music profs in college all pronounced leitmotiv like "leet moteef" but in fact it is more like "light moteef." A lot of them were probably familiar with general German pronunciation from e.g. singing German lyrics, but I guess English habits die hard.

This 1952 memo from the Pentagon UFO files is superb There is no point preparing for aliens ‘because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.’ 🤣 www.war.gov/medialink/uf...
There likely is nothing to be done at the moment to prepare for these possibilities (the only body of writing on the subject available in an emergency is science fiction), because no one of consequence is going to take this rubbish seriously unless it happens. At that point, our policy will be determined in the traditional manner of grand panic.

Loved non-fiction trope: when, in between the descriptions of the achievements of some past intellectual, the author offhandedly throws in some unhinged, unrelated biographical detail.
Book excerpt which reads: "Stanford, it is said, won his bet. The tale may be apocryphal, but it's certainly true that Stanford eventually commissioned Muybridge to photograph the movement of other animals, including humans, engaged in various activities. Later in his career, Muybridge murdered a man who was having an affair with his wife; he was acquitted on the ground of temporary insanity. Muybridge pioneered the quantitative study of gaits, and adapted a mechanical device known as the zoetrope to display them as 'moving pictures'. He first named his modified gadget the zoographiscope, then changed it to zoogyroscope, zoopraxinoscope, and finally zoopraxiscope."

Before using god names, Greek planet names were Phainon "shining one" (Saturn); Phaethon "brilliant one" (Jupiter); Pyroeis "fiery one" (Mars); Phosphoros "light bearer" (Venus); Stilbon "gleaming one" (Mercury). Think they found enough names saying "hey this thing's bright!"?

I'm not crazy, right? A lot of people pronounce "onomatopoeia" with an actual [n] for the /t/, like [ɑ.nə.mɑ.nə.pi.ə] or something. Either that or I just consistently mishear their flap [ɾ] as an [n].

It's outrageous that "malleable" literally just means "hammerable" (from verbified forms of the Latin noun malleus, "hammer"). We sit around using it like it's a poetic word to express capacity to change form, and it just means "you can whack this with a heavy stick."

Excerpt from play script. Faust: "In any clothes, I'd feel the misery of this cramped, suffocating life on earth. I'm too old to live for amusement only, too young to wish for nothing, wait for death. The world--what has it got to say to me? Renounce all that you long for, all--renounce! That's the truth that all pronounce so sagely, so interminably, the non-stop croak, the universal chant: you can't have what you want, you can't!"

RIP Otto Rank, you would have loved analyzing vore fetishes. (From The Trauma of Birth, London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., Ltd., 1929, p. 35)
Text reads: "Whilst the masochist seeks to re-establish the original pleasurable condition by means of affective revaluation of the birth trauma, the sadist personifies the unquenchable hatred of one who has been expelled; he really attempts with his fully grown body to go back into the place whence he came as a child, without considering that he thereby tears his sacrifice to pieces--this being by no means his main intention...."
