"some within the Alberta separatist movement wouldn’t blink at our subordination to the American state. What, people must ask themselves in the weeks before the vote, are they willing to risk by voting for secession?" #gift 🎁 #cdnpoli #ableg #abpoli www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/90e3098...
It should come, perhaps, as no surprise that some in Alberta’s separatist movement are happy to sell out the province, swapping the authority of the Canadian government for domination by MAGA overlords in the United States. They do, after all, have no loyalty to Canada. But you’d think, in an ideal world, they’d have some loyalty to Alberta – and Albertans. If you’re going to fight for an independent Alberta you ought, at least, to fight for independence, and not for vassalage to one’s neighbour.

The silver lining to the horror story is that traditional pneumonic plague is inefficient at spreading - it kills its host far too quickly. However, given the international consensus that Russia has an active bioweapons programme, it would be presumptious to rule out a novel, weaponised strain.

If there isn't demand “We’ll deal with that at the time"? Aren't we glad Hodgson is a "betting person"? You know who has no problem taking huge risks that harm other people? Who don't break a sweat? Snakes in suits. Subclinical psychopaths. There's a reason Hodgson headed up Goldman Sachs Canada.
“The proponents here will have an open season, likely next spring, and in that open season, shippers will be asked to commit to long-term contracts to take oil over that pipeline,” he added.

If shippers do not commit to the pipeline, Hodgson said: “We’ll deal with that at the time.”

“But if I were a betting person today, looking at what we’ve just seen happen on the TMX, where shippers increased their contracted portion of the pipeline, and where I hear from everyone (that) they would like more, if I were a betting person, I think that’s a pretty good bet for the Canadian taxpayer,” Hodgson said.

What a lie. Some of these people are being imprisoned indefinitely in squalid condition in African prisons. Others report being beaten and arbitrarily deported in violation of international law back to their home countries, where they face persecution or torture.
The indefinite nature of their confinement has taken a severe toll. In October 2025, a Cuban man who was on the July flight went on a hunger strike for a month-until he started showing signs of organ failure —to protest the conditions of his detention, including his ongoing confinement and lack of access to legal counsel.
Terrified of being imprisoned in Eswatini forever, another man repeatedly told his attorney that the prison there never lets people go. One man told his attorney that he feels like a caged animal with no end in sight. The prison does not have air conditioning, making the hot, humid summer months especially uncomfortable for the men.
Food is insufficient, medication is scarce, and requests often go unmet or are belatedly met.

Slowly, the Brazilians were learning the same lesson as other American allies around the world: The United States of America is no longer the entity they knew. And American power is no longer deployed solely by trained diplomats and reliable officials, working through state channels. Informal envoys, private companies, online grifters, and hardened ideologues both inside and outside the government matter more. Unlike their predecessors, these people do not talk about spreading democracy, and don’t want to build long-term relationships. They don’t care about America’s reputation. They are deploying the tools of American diplomacy and government for their own purposes, to promote their own business interests or their own ideological goals, because, suddenly, they can.
