This is the 3rd example I've recently seen/heard about of academics voluntarily proposing reduced contracts to stave off redundancy. I totally understand the desperation, but it's a worrying precedent too? Easy to see how it will become a weapon of management ("take the fraction, or lose your job").

The university model is built upon and maintained by a cohort of people who have never known financial hardship, housing issues, or had their basic needs denied. They may still have problems, we all do, but their ability to navigate and thrive is significantly higher. Their safety net is secure.
