I have now had to have multiple conversations with my mother-in-law that the “tears of joy” emoji is not the appropriate emoji to use when replying to a message telling her that someone she knows has died. MULTIPLE conversations.

All this talk about Labour ruling in/out Greens tax policy seems to misunderstand what elections are for. It’s like this All Whites team agreeing to draw with Egypt as long as Egypt draws with Iran later on. Everyone should just go hard out with your policies and then see how the chips fall.

It is an old line, but it remains true: every dollar invested in early childhood support saves around 13 dollars in criminal justice costs later on. A society that keeps expanding its prisons is admitting its social policies are not working. #nzpol

It costs a million dollars a day to keep low‑risk defendants on remand. More prisons aren’t the answer
Analysis - The government has framed its $503 million budget spending on prisons as necessary to maintain public safety. Is that really the case?

Just 2 to 3% of NZers are paid in the same bracket as MPs, the rest of them probably don't get to claim $1000 a week accommodation allowance and I suppose one could say that is unfair? Or we could all shout SHAME! at the hypocrites. They have no concept what it's like to lose 15 or $30 a week #NZPol

Harmful marketing is an overlooked social determinant of health. Marketing plays an essential role in sustaining harmful consumption. Children are exposed to unhealthy marketing 76 times per day. Are we willing to confront marketing for its role in harmful industries? #nzpol

Just watching the news and seemingly every single country in the world is doing *something* about the fuel crisis - public transport subsidies, reducing tax on fuel, four day working weeks, evening curfews, rationing … … and we are doing sweet FA.

I hate that the Fed Deli isn’t “late night” any more. Just got out of the Bic Runga show and really wanted coffee and pie. I don’t understand why you can’t get late night coffee in Auckland anymore. It’s like we’ve devolved since the 90s.

Returning to an old favourite. The pink line is the official GDP data (% change for year vs previous year). The wild swings are due to Govt *subsidies* (e.g. wage subsidies) being deducted from the official GDP stats. The blue line shows the unadjusted data; far better reflects reality.

I know everyone is on holiday, but I’m surprised no NZ journo has done a story on Amanda Palmer’s attempt at playing a show in Auckland this week. Both Waiheke venues “mysteriously” canceled and now it’s a “secret” show somewhere in the CBD tomorrow.
