The poet as Bodhisattva. Dear Reader by James Tate
Dear Reader
I am trying to pry open your casket
with this burning snowflake.

I'll give up my sleep for you.
This freezing sleet keeps coming down
and I can barely see.

If this trick works we can rub our hands
together, maybe

start a little fire
with our idenification papers.
I don't know but I keep working, working

half hating you,
half eaten by the moon.

The earliest form of marbling originated in Japan (and possibly China) around the 12th century. Known as Suminagashi or "floating ink"). As the trade routes evolved, the concept traveled to Central Asia, Persia (modern-day Iran). In Türkiye they call it ebru. IG: @thesoftasylum

People think the world needs a republic, and they think it needs a new social order, and a new religion, but it never occurs to anyone that what the world really needs, confused as it is by much learning, is a #Socrates. - #Kierkegaard, 'The Sickness Unto Death'

I can get behind the main thrust of this discussion. There’s definitely something to be said for psychedelics opening up the question of the sacred, whether that be couched in religious terms or secular (e.g. ‘that which must be preserved’).

A helpful critique of Mark Solms' work by Robert Samuels. While I think there can be useful dialogue and connections made between #psychoanalysis and #neuroscience, efforts to marry the two often involve shoehorning & conceptual mismatching.

Reviewing Mark Solms’ The Only Cure: Freud and the Neuroscience of Mental Healing
As I wrote in a previous entry on Mark Solms, his effort to combine psychoanalysis and neuroscience tends to misrepresent the core ideas of Freud’s fundamental theory.

Pretty wild! 😮 Seems there’s no #Wikipedia entry for the American painter Alton Pickens (1917-1991), but I recommend checking out his other works online. Much of it is similarly unsettling, surreal and/or has what I can only describe as an enchanting quality to it.

You know one of the oddities of our time is that at least some things that now get dismissed as utopian dreams are not future hopes, but things that really did exist in living memory — affordable housing, a proper social safety net, a climate that isn’t running out of balance. Many others.
