And I'm having real trouble having sympathy for the combination of determination to become PM and lack of leadership once in the role. (It's much easier to do that for the properly accidental PMs we've had recently.) 020

Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 25/09/2026At its worst, it's like the scene near the end of Schindler's List- the knowledge that you could have done a bit more, saved another one, is heartbreaking. Caring as much as you can, but then no more... It's important, but it's so hard. 000

Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Speaking really well without notes is a rare skill to be prized. Speaking competently is largely a question of knowing your facts and having thought through your principles. Thousands of teachers do it more than adequately several times a day. 112

Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Symptom of a wider problem. For decades, we have sweated all our assets; we've pocketed lots of money by running everything as close to 100% capacity as we dare. Hospitals, roads, businesses... The paradox is that, as you hit 100% utilisation, things get messier and less efficient. 120

Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 20/09/2026...The assessment model was the usual mess, and the citizen science (which was often quite subtle) became the first module, which was the wrong place for it. Then there was the snobbery against GCSEs that don't lead to Level 3 courses... we haven't solved that one. 111
Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 20/09/2026We had that for a while- all the "beyond 2000" GCSE courses from 2008 or so. I liked the focus on "science for citizens"/"how science works", but it didn't really stick... 120

Reposted by Stuart HaywardDead Carl @deadcarl.bsky.social · 17/09/2026It’s underrated how many of the cardinal achievements of modernity are things that allow for you to interact with people you don’t personally trust. “Contracts are enforceable” and “my safety doesn’t depend on someone being willing to avenge me” really changes the ways you can live. 7788141
Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 15/09/2026It's one thing to do that for a minority of students, but it's a really problematic model if you apply it to most subjects for most students. I'm involved in courses that use the 'supervised locked-down online research then written exam' model, and it sucks up most of the campus IT and supervision. 010
Stuart Hayward @stuartteachphys.bsky.social · 15/09/2026How many GCSE subjects still have coursework? Taking science as an example I know about, schools have to do a certain list of practicals (GCSE)/students show competence at a core set of skills (AL)- but that's yes/no at a manageably basic level. Differentiation between grades is all by written exam. 110
