If you’re curious and wondering what Putin said in Valdai, don’t waste your time. He spouted his usual nonsense and lies about how russia never attacked anyone and is the kindest, humblest nation in history, always victimized and threatened by its nefarious European neighbours.

I used to think (like 10 years ago) that there was some line they’d cross where the political press would start talking about their racism as a matter of fact, not opinion. But there was no line. I still can’t believe it.

I feel the need to note that the Romans don't really present 'power' (potentia, vis) as their chief virtue. Instead, the Romans were "always harping on fides ['faith, trust']" (Dioc. Sic. 23.1); Cicero gives the virtue where Rome surpasses others as pietas (piety, Cic. Har. resp. 9.19).

Trump expressed support for the Iraq war as it started. He later criticized Bush for not stealing oil or doing enough war crimes (namely targeting innocent family members of insurgents). Then he acted on that vision of war with Iran, and it's failing badly. Enough Trump-absolving revisionist BS.

In the 1990s, Ru didn’t hold clean elections; the oppo rejected democracy; the constitution-writing process ended in a shootout; it leveled Chechnya, occupied parts of Moldova/Georgia, supported the aggressor in the Yugoslav wars. Still some fantasize about how it could've joined the EU. Laughable.

It's absurd that the self-styled proponents of "peace and diplomacy" and tireless opponents of arms and militarization criticize Ukraine--the side that has offered an *immediate and unconditional ceasefire*-- instead of Russia-- the aggressor who rejects it.

The "shock therapy killed everyone" exaggeration is tiresome and what’s worse is singling out Ru as having uniquely suffered in the 1990s. Guess what, recovering from the failure of the Soviet-style command economies was tough for everyone but only russia ended up as a murderous dictatorship!

This a great explainer. I’ll add this: 1) many don’t realize that the reforms were necessary; they were formulated to deal w a real problem; they didn’t break anything that worked; the command economy was inherently flawed and falling apart. I’ll also add that…

This is a poor take that suggests Owen Jones doesn't know much about Russia in the 1990s, including Russia-US or wider Russia-West relations in the 1990s. By giving only one part of the story, he is repeating the Russian political elite's self-serving line that it was all the West's fault. Long 🧵

I'm not going to agree that it was fundamentally wrong to kill Hezbollah fighters with relatively low civilian casualties after they shot thousands of rockets at civilian targets for nearly a year. No state would ignore daily rocket fire, nor accept forced depopulation of cities.

Also yet another example of how absurd it is to believe threat is fully in the eye of the beholder and can’t be objectively measured. We know Ukr wasnt planning anything. To allow second guessing the facts to say that perhaps Lavrov isn’t lying but is deluded/mistaken is a travesty against truth.

Lavrov told the UN today that Ru was forced to invade in 2022 because Ukraine was about to try to retake Donbas. First, 💯💯 false. But also, now you know the exact line he will use to justify Ru’s third invasion if Ukraine were to agree to give up all of Donbas in this round of useless "peace talks".
