Metroidvania is a dumb, but charming term that carries history. It has perhaps outlived its natural life span, but oh my god Search Action is a disgusting fucking term, like calling sausages 'stuffed pig guts'

Say what you will about Yoshiyuki Tomino as a director, but I do find a lot of his thoughts on writing he's given over the years to be very illuminating. A truly unique voice in the world of anime in so many ways.

Real quote from Yoshiyuki Tomino:

"You know everyone has a special talent. Mine is being able to write, produce, direct, act, paint. Other people are good plumbers, that's their gift."

Real quote from Yoshiyuki Tomino, not made up. Promise.

"All I do, is sit down at the typewriter, and start hitting the keys. Getting them in the right order, that's the trick."

Real quote from Yoshiyuki Tomino. Totes legit.

"As a writer, I make my own rules up, okay? If I wanna start a sentence with a full-stop I will. If I want to highlight social prejudice, I will, but I’ll do it my way. And sometimes you actually have to be a bigot, in order to bring down bigger bigots."

Real quote from Yoshiyuki Tomino from actual interviews he gave. I wouldn't lie to you would I?

"This episode is really about my own desire to have a son, um, I have four daughters, and, whilst I don't blame them as such, I don't really feel they're on my side."

Good morning

Bellri Zenam and Aida Surugan from Gundam Reconguista in G are edited to be in a Burger King. Aida is standing and pointing at Bellri with an annoyed look on her face. Bellri is sitting down and looking away in embarrassment while wearing a paper burger king crown. There is a caption that says "Excuse me, He asked for no pickles!"

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters

All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

When I talk about why I approach them with a certain sheepishness, this is part of it. I know so many people who've been thinking about games and writing against this position. How do push back against this? I don't know if there's a remedy to this. The "culture" is broadly poisoned with no cure!

NEW ARTICLE! "In The Copied Cathedral", my exploration of the Drakengard/NieR series, continues with a bumper dissection of 2010's NIER. Cavia's swansong is strange and formulaic, inventive and predictable, and finds its own kind of beauty in how these things clash together.

nier automata is in a long lineage of its genre fiction where it longs for a grand, healing act of violence that can wipe the slate clean evangelion style and be this powerful emotional catharsis for the audience but ultimately i think its storytelling isn't mythic enough for that?

People tend to equate "modernized thing" with "new & unique thing", I don't think the 2 are the same, they're almost the exact opposite. Modernization is taking an old thing & applying known "modern stadandards" to it. Whereas a new & unique thing shapes those "modern standards" in its image
