DHS is simply buying local cops’ support with our tax dollars. Like I’ve been saying, they own a lot of these cops. www.wsj.com/us-news/immi...
Even if Boring's deputies don't take any others into custody, his department is eligible for a payment equal to more than a quarter of its annual budget. Those are the terms of a Department of Homeland Security task force program that enlists local police as paid partners in the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
Jurisdictions similar to Doddridge County-sparsely populated with few immigrants-make up the majority of new recruits to the
DHS task force program, which has become a cash cow for state and local law enforcement agencies nationwide. After turning over a single deportable immigrant, departments qualify to receive $60,000 a year for each deputized officer, regardless of additional arrests. The Venice Police Department in Venice, Fla., tallied one federal immigration detention in September 2025 and has since requested a total of $895,000. The department can continue collecting funds every quarter as long as it remains on the task force.
The program is most profitable for large departments. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office in Florida signed up more than 970 deputies, making it eligible for roughly $14.5 million in DHS funds from April to June, state records show. That pencils out to more than $2 million for each of its seven immigration arrests in that quarter.

Wisconsin Central Sand Plain finally wins MinCup.
View across the western part of the central sand plain of Wisconsin, a landscape of thin sandy soils over quartz-rich sandstone bedrock. The landscape is forest covered, in fall color, with small hills in the distance.Top of a small bluff of Cambrian sandstone, with a rock outcrop surrounded by birch trees and a mix of forest and open land in the distance. There is snow on the ground.

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

Oh boy, looks like some fuckass op-ed take is going around again! Allow me to tap the sign: buttondown.com/alanhenry/ar...
So here’s the problem: the usual reaction to stories like these is to try not to hate-read it, collectively dunk on it on social media, and then dismiss it as just another bad take, engineered to get clicks and drive traffic. That’s partially true, but I’ve been around long enough to notice there’s something a little more consistent about them. While yes, they’re definitely engineered to drive engagement, they’re also engineered to remind you that these people have the space to air these bad, generally ill-thought-out opinions, and you don’t. That they’re not only of a class of people with the privilege to be arguably bad people without consequences, but they get paid to be. And they get paid, on average, a lot.

They’re there to remind you that they get to make the rules and you don’t. That you’ll always, on some level, be on the outside of the club, looking in, that they get to define the status quo, regardless of how ridiculous their definition may be. Periodically I get a brief window into those worlds—the ones just apart from ours, where these people live, work, and play, and where they make their own rules and have no interest or obligation to obey the ones that control our lives. It’s not pretty.

They have a platform and a megaphone to air how terrible they are, but the rest of us will likely never have the same platform to discuss how we should be good to each other—and even if we did, it wouldn’t be interesting because it’s not the kind of thing you couldn't hear anywhere else. After all, encouraging empathy and compassion aren’t newsworthy, but telling someone they shouldn’t trust the CDC or those generations of cultures that ask you remove your shoes when you enter someone’s home are all wrong because I say so are guaranteed to be “buzzy” and “generate discourse.” See the issue?

The original Mr. Peanut! 🥜 At first glance, this Moche ceramic stirrup-spout bottle looks like a figure wearing a hooded cloak. Amazing details and color. THEN you look at the back … he’s a peanut! Peanuts are native to South America and have been used in their cuisine for millennia. 🏺 1/ 📸 me
This bottle depicts a figure wrapped within a peanut shell reclining on its side. The vessel has a stirrup-spout handle, a common spout form used in the second half of the Moche period (ca. 500 – 850 CE). The body of the vessel, possibly produced using a mold, was decorated with pigmented slip applied before firing. The figure’s torso is exposed, revealing a sleeved tunic featuring a repeated motif and additional sleeve detailing. Only the person’s legs, hands, and face remain uncovered. The hand gesture of the thumb touching the index finger became more common in Moche pottery after 600 CE (Donnan and McClelland 1979, 63). A headstrap, worn just above the eyebrows, adorns the forehead, peeking out from beneath the tip of the peanut shell (for another example of this type of headstrap see MMA 67.167.21). The small bulge on the figure’s left cheek suggests the individual is chewing coca.

Met MuseumRear view of this stirrup-spout vessel (so named because the spout resembles a stirrup, with the rounded portion intersected with an upright spout) revealing that this is a peanut. Whether it’s supposed to be an anthropomorphic peanut or a man wearing a peanut shaped cloak is unknown.

500-800 CE, Peru. Met Museum.
