Dido with attendants and a goddess personifying Africa (suggested by the elephant headdress). In the distance there is a ship which suggests this scene depicts the moment Dido realises that Aeneas had unceremoniously dumped her to continue his quest to found Rome. #AncientRome #AncientBluesky🏺
Detail from a fresco found in the House of Meleager (Pompeii VI.9.2) now held in the MAN Napoli, inv. 8898. First image shows Dido seated with two attendants. One holds a parasol over Dido’s head while the other holds what seems to be a piece of ivory. The second image shows a goddess who seems to be wearing an elephant head as part of her headdress suggesting she’s a representation of Africa.

so much is against reading for pleasure, writing for play, looking without agenda, wondering, just wondering. too much keeps us from beauty that is freedom, from mystery that is freedom, from the freeing questions, from the free inner life that is (or should be!) always ours

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink

tonight i am thinking fondly and quite emotionally about propertius 2.7 (tl vincent katz)
2.7

Cynthia delights, certainly, that the law has been lifted,
those edicts we once cried so much over,
afraid they'd separate us, although Jupiter himself
is unable to divide two unwilling lovers.

"But Caesar is great." But Caesar is great in war:
conquered nations are worth nothing in love.
I would sooner allow my head to be severed from my neck
than I'd bear wasting torches at some bride's command
or passing your bolted gate, a married man,
looking back with wet eyes at what I'd lost.
Ah, then what dirges my flute would sing for you,
flute, even sadder than the funeral bugle!

Where will I get sons to offer for triumphs of the state?
None from my blood will be a soldier.
But if I were lodging in real camps—my girl's—
Castor's great horse wouldn't go fast enough for me.
My glory from this service has earned my fame,
glory far and wide to northern Borysthenis.
You alone please me: may I alone, Cynthia, please you:
this love will be worth much more than the blood of my fathers.

Fresco of Diana the huntress, with bow and arrow. She wears cream and yellow toned garments and seems to nearly float against the blue background, though there is a gesture to solid ground with a white line. The fresco is held in the MAN Napoli. Wake up, babe. New imperial-style Roman villa just dropped! (It was discovered at Castel di Guido a few miles/km west of Rome, in an area called Lorium that was popular with the Antonine dynasty. And there's a cool photo gallery at the link as well!) 🏺🧪

Lavish Roman villa discovered outside Rome's walls may have been frequented by Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius
The villa, which came to light because it was illegally excavated, was found in an area frequented two millennia ago by the emperors Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.

joy is not made to be a crumb!!!!!!!
Don't Hesitate by Mary Oliver

If you suddenly and unexpectedly feel joy, don't hesitate. Give in to it. There are plenty of lives and whole towns destroyed or about to be. We are not wise, and not very often kind. And much can never be redeemed.
Still, life has some possibility left. Perhaps this is its way of fighting back, that sometimes something happens better than all the riches or power in the world. It could be anything, but very likely you notice it in the instant when love begins. Anyway, that's often the case. Anyway, whatever it is, don't be afraid of its plenty. Joy is not made to be a crumb.
