These fragments from a Roman villa in Spain are not from a mosaic but from a fresco. If you look closely you’ll see a grid of lines, many following the contour of the figures, much as tesserae do on mosaics. This trompe-l’oeil technique simulates mosaics. 1/ 🏺 1st-2nd c. Museo de Málaga 📸 me
Fragment of a fresco depicting part of a human face, mostly the eyes. Thin lines form a grid pattern, simulating the edges of tesserae.Fresco fragment showing a naked torso of a woman, her legs and pubic area covered in a red himation (cloak). Her right hand carries a basket laden with fruit, which look like giant globes of grapes. Grapevine leaves appear in the background. A Dionysian scene. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of the body.Fresco fragment depicting some sort of half-human creature with wild hair and bare torso, gesturing upwards with his right hand and holding a branched stick with his left. The faux tesserae grid lines follow the curves of his garment and body.Fresco fragment with the torso of perhaps a god with golden skin, a red himation flowing outwards and partially covering his or her legs. Perhaps Dionysos?

academic databases need to stop pushing those dumb AI article summary tools. a lot of articles already have that. it’s called the abstract

so very late in replying to this, but thank you for reading dear cair and i'm glad/saddened to hear that it resonated with you ❤️ something that has weirdly helped me is realizing that a lot of these ED thought patterns are not unique to me and instead are sort of symptomatic. we are in this together

Dido with attendants and a goddess personifying Africa (suggested by the elephant headdress). In the distance there is a ship which suggests this scene depicts the moment Dido realises that Aeneas had unceremoniously dumped her to continue his quest to found Rome. #AncientRome #AncientBluesky🏺
Detail from a fresco found in the House of Meleager (Pompeii VI.9.2) now held in the MAN Napoli, inv. 8898. First image shows Dido seated with two attendants. One holds a parasol over Dido’s head while the other holds what seems to be a piece of ivory. The second image shows a goddess who seems to be wearing an elephant head as part of her headdress suggesting she’s a representation of Africa.

can i just say that the odyssey conversations are exhausting because everyone is acting as if everyone else is stupid. you’re pedantic and elitist if you didn’t like the film; you’re pedestrian and uninformed if you did. yes the arts have always sparked conversation and controversy but like. my god

Lieutenant Colonel Marinus Willet, a stalwart at Fort Stanwix the previous summer, wrote that the commander in chief "had a spy-glass in his hand.... He seemed to observe and know everything." Washington actually knew little.

so much is against reading for pleasure, writing for play, looking without agenda, wondering, just wondering. too much keeps us from beauty that is freedom, from mystery that is freedom, from the freeing questions, from the free inner life that is (or should be!) always ours

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.
A screenshot from here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2025-02-07-inside-herculaneum-scroll-seen-first-time-almost-2000-years

It explains that the machine learning involves only the detection of ink
