to fight for a world that works for all of us we must be the party of plenty. anything else and we are playing into the same trap of fighting each other instead of the people and systems that benefit from keeping us at each others throats.

build the laptop job guy a place to live! freeze the bartender’s rent! build mixed income social housing down the street where both of their friends/family members can live! progressives and leftists, stop taking scarcity and fear mongering cues from right wingers.

if your issue is that the person from des moines with a laptop job is displacing the bartender from warsaw i beg you to fight against the NIMBYs on city council and in your neighborhood who are blocking the housing projects that would let them both live there without raising that bartender’s rent!

stevie. @steviemoraa.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
if your issue is rich people buying up property in poor neighborhoods for speculative reasons, say that. if your issue is that the bartender in green point is from des moines instead of warsaw then what exactly are we doing??

stevie. @steviemoraa.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
i’ll say again and again that displacement is a systemic issue, not an individual one. gentrification is largely the result of not having enough housing (of all kinds) and tenant protections, of not having liveable wages and social supports.

“if you are not from here, you don’t belong here. you’re the reason i can’t find affordable housing. go back to where you came from.” when republicans say this stuff we call them xenophobic bigots, but increasingly i’m seeing this stuff from people in major cities and i find it a little alarming!

Jacksonville Florida, the nation’s 11th largest city, has approved 22% transit cuts. It’s a nightmare: —Most bus service will operate on Sat schedule —The city’s automated rail service will simply not run —A “Navi” automated bus service will become manual because they can’t afford the software

not to be crude, but imagine you’re fighting for your life in a public restroom and suddenly it starts yelling at you and opens to door mid bowel evacuation. if we’re worried about drug users etc, we should spend resources on things we know will help them instead of doing weird things like this!

jenn, be grateful that you have never experienced any kind of digestive health issue or brain-gut disorder! it can be rough for folks with crohns, IBS, colitis etc public restrooms already exist in nyc without timers/limits! mostly what’s horrifying to me is that it automatically opens the door.

Once inside, users are put on a strict 10-minute time limit. As an occupant approaches the limit, a speaker inside the room emits an automated message telling them they're running out of time. Once the 10 minutes are up, the speaker states, "Attention: Your use time has expired.
The door is opening now," in English and Spanish, before the automated door slides open, exposing the user to the public.

I love Berkeley, people will build their entire politics around the idea that mitigating climate change requires radically restructuring the world economy, but they draw the line at a 12 story building a few blocks away or replacing some parking spaces with bike lanes.

I'm thrilled to share our new chapter on green social housing, looking at Vienna *and* Uruguay. It was super fun to put state- and movement-led housing projects in dialogue. It's in the brilliant @joobilly.bsky.social's new book, Building Postcarbon Futures.
Chapter title: Decommodify, then Decarbonize: Lessons in Housing from Austria and Uruguay

think the solutions we should be prioritizing are safer/separated bike networks that make regular biking feel more feasible, zoning that allows for neighborhood amenities, and better public transportation for when folks do need to travel farther.

there’s a lot of Discourse about ebike safety, and while i think a lot of it is in bad faith, i have also seen a number of collisions between ebikes and others and i do worry. but i don’t think the solution is ebike bans, etc—

stevie. @steviemoraa.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
i don’t think folks would feel as much need for that level of speed and power on a bicycle if 1. things were not so spread out and 2. there wasn’t some amount of pressure to keep up with car traffic. despite going at fast speeds, it can feel safer that way.

stevie. @steviemoraa.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
i like ebikes and think it’s great that more people are replacing car trips with ebike trips. AND i think that part of the popularity of ebikes stems from that fact that we have extremely car centric infrastructure. ebikes make it much easier to navigate (vs an acoustic bike).

Can confirm. Columbus City Schools are stretched so thin - partly because of the absurd requirement they have to bus private school students - that my kid's bus route now covers an area from Vassor Village to Bethel Road, which is like 16+ miles. Unsurprisingly, it is frequently late to school.

i understand that some level of mitigation is probably necessary in the short term, but this still sucks. the gesture at robert moses and the limited powers of the city aside, it would be great to see a larger vision for the dismantling and reimagining of the BQE.

local elected officials often fear backlash for these projects, but the people want more dense, walkable, transit and bike friendly cities! it’s why ballot measures for transit funding across the country pass at a rate of 80+% every year.
policies tested. The most popular proposals
include expanding sidewalk coverage and
creating more pedestrian-friendly streets
(80%), expanding bus services and providing discounted fares (77%), updating zoning rules to encourage walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods (75%), and investing in safer bike lanes and expanded cycling infrastructure (74%).

Why is the climate changing? Fossil fuels are the biggest contributor, but we also have invisible ghosts of like 2 billion hectares of cleared forests hanging out up in the sky, so we can all eat (Land-use change is responsible for about 1/4-1/3 of total cumulative CO2 emissions since 1750)

“Corridor zoning” was a political grand bargain we should no longer find acceptable for urban housing politics in the twenty first century. It’s time to buck up and legalize the urban just future where housing as abundant, accessible, and affordable - and not just relegated to the major streets
