New research from me (well, actually, from my PhD thesis). HD 38451 is a star which inexplicably changed colour in the 1850s. It is known to be rapidly rotating, based on spectroscopy. It turns out the TESS light curve shows a tiny rotational modulation too 🧪🔭 iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3...

The colorful naked eye Double Cluster in Perseus. They are "only" 14 million years old so they still contain many short-lived blue-white supergiants. They are approaching Earth at about 39 km/s and are 7500 light years away. How long until they reach us? Details in ALT. #astrophotography
A dense field of colorful stars with two noticeable concentrations of stars with many large blue and a few yellow and orange stars. A large field of glowing magenta hydrogen gas and stars with 3 small bright blue nebula in the middle. Taken with a Takahashi TSA 120 with a 0.7x reducer and ZWO ASI 2600MM camera. I've been fortunate to have this experience happen several times in my life. Look where the stars *aren't* to see the mountain! #MountainMonday #Hiking #Stars #Astrophotography #MilkyWay #Oregon #Nature Mount Thielsen, Oregon
A jagged black silhouette juts up from the bottom of this photograph, lower at a mountain pass at lower right, to the peak with two tops just left of center, and downward after a hump to the peaks left. The left side is not so low as the right side.
This silhouette is off an entire mountain, with the sky behind it filled with all manner of stars. Especially just up from the mountain's peak where dense brighter clouds of stars, and darker cloudy shapes of opaque dust block starlight, all rising almost straight up from the mountain to the top center of the image. This is a part of the Milky Way we live inside.

Happy 118th birthday, spacetime. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Hermann Minkowski addressed the 80th Assembly of German Natural Scientists and Physicians #OTD in 1908, offering a radical four-dimensional reformulation of Einstein's theory of special relativity. Here is how he opened his address.
"The views of space and time which I wish to lay before you have sprung from the soil of experimental physics, and therein lies their strength. They are radical. Henceforth space by itself, and time by itself, are doomed to fade away into mere shadows, and only a kind of union of the two will preserve an independent reality."

At some 53 Mly, by the Virgo Cluster, sit galaxies whose surface light sits close to the sky level. Few stars, spread over a huge area. A study of Rubin LSST DP2 data reports 7 of them, around galaxy M49. Image: Fig. 1 of the paper. NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin data (DP2). 🔭 🧪 ⚛️ #cosmology
Figure composed of seven side-by-side panels, each a crop of the night sky from the Vera Rubin telescope. Each panel shows one of the seven galaxy candidates in the paper. Across the dark field sit many stars of our own Galaxy. They look like sharp points, some brighter, some fainter, and they are not the galaxies named in the title. Those stars are in the foreground. Each panel has a pale patch in the middle. The edges fade out. That patch is a rarefied dwarf galaxy: few stars over a wide area, so it does not read as a sharp disk or a spiral. It looks oval or almost round, dull, gray or gray-yellow. Six of them stay small in the frame. AD 7, the last one, takes more of the frame and looks fainter. It is a wide, dim blot and does not stand out from the background as clearly as the others. The color is stacked and false. It is there only to show objects that would otherwise stay almost invisible. Each panel has a scale bar at the bottom. One arcminute is about 4.7 kiloparsecs — roughly 15,000 light-years — if the galaxies are at the Virgo Cluster distance. North is up. East is to the left.
