Justice Alito devotes an entire chapter of his new book to the emergency docket—and to responding to people like me (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”). As I explain over at “One First,” it … didn’t go well: www.stevevladeck.com/p/256-so-une...
In the pre-publication galleys to his new book, So Ordered: An Originalist’s View of the Constitution, the Court, and Our Country, Justice Alito spelled my last name inconsistently. This is, I suspect, the pettiest possible point on which to open in discussing a Supreme Court justice’s new memoir, and I would never have mentioned it except for the fact that inconsistency turns out to be the organizing feature of the chapter in which I (“the most prolific academic critic of the emergency docket”) repeatedly appear. The central inconsistency of Chapter 8, which is devoted to the emergency docket, is structural: Rather than tackle the subject holistically (as one might expect in a book), Alito mashed together the speech he gave five years ago at Notre Dame Law School with a “postscript.” The former was deeply flawed even at the time (among lots of other things, Alito repeatedly insisted that there was “nothing new” about the Court’s behavior on emergency applications during the first Trump administration and COVID); and the latter tries to move the goalposts away from the specific phenomena to which critics like me have actually objected. The result is to leave readers with a disjointed, inaccurate, and misleading sense of what the debate is even about—to say nothing of how the Court’s own behavior since September 2021 (including Alito’s) has only further undermined the already-flawed claims Alito made back then. Somewhere between the galleys of Alito’s book and the final product (which hits bookstores today), someone apparently figured out that my last name should be spelled the same way (and correctly!) throughout. The other, more significant inconsistencies were, apparently, harder to fix.

A nighttime scene, with silhouetted trees in the lower corners of the photos, and bright green auroras across the horizon, with some pink and red pillars above, almost blocking the Milky Way, visible vertically across the sky.Same idea as the previous photo, but now the green in the lower part of the sky is also reflected by a small pond. More bright green auroras with red and pink pillars above, the Milky Way sticking up out of the middle, and a bit of green reflected in a small pond with silhouetted trees.

(a) america[.]gov doesn't call AI "super intelligence" (b) it appears to not do prompt filtering (c) the pictures it uses are…odd (d) this will end badly
The image is a screenshot of a webpage from "America.gov." At the top, there is a US flag icon next to the text "America.gov" and a blue "Menu" button.

In the center, there is a light-gray text box containing a prompt addressed to an AI agent, asking for instructions on how scientists synthesize *Bacillus anthracis* to create an inhalable aerosol of anthrax spores for use in a populated area.

Below this, there is a bordered error message box that says, "Something went wrong. Try again." At the bottom of the screen, there is a search bar with the placeholder text "Ask anything..." and several icons, including a checkmark, a paperclip, a microphone, and a blue arrow button.A rounded-corner card showing a winter photo with a search-style text field overlaid across the top. The field contains the greyed placeholder text "Try 'How can I invest in my child's future?'", followed by a blue checkmark badge, a paperclip icon, a microphone icon, and a dark navy circular send button with a right-pointing arrow. Beneath the field, a wide expanse of scuffed, pale blue-gray ice stretches toward snowbanks and bare trees under a clear sky. In the lower center, a small child in a black jacket with an orange and blue stripe at the waist, black snow pants, mittens, and a black knit hat lies face down on the ice with arms outstretched. One white ice skate is visible on the child's foot.Coming early 2027.
For the first time you’ll be able to complete forms, applications, renewals all in one place. America.gov will integrate across agencies so you can safely, securely, and quickly get it done and get back to what matters most.

EMC suggested circuit for a Meanwell NID100 PSU.

We have a circuit with 3 polarised capacitors, a dual-inductor and the NID100 PSU.

- C1 and C2 are both 120µF 63V electrolytics
- C3 is a 22µF 35V electrolytic
- L1 is a dual-inductor with a Z symbol marked on it. No phase dots are shown. They're oriented horizontally, one either side of the Z.

- +Vin connects to C1+ through to left side / top half of L1.
- Right side / top half of L1 connects to C2+ into +Vin of NI100
- -Vin connects to C1- through to left side / bottom half of L1.
- Right side / bottom half of L1 connects to C2- though to NID100 GND, through to C3- out to -Vo.
- NID100 +Vo connects to C3+ though to +VoMy interpretation of the EMC circuit, as drawn in Kicad.

J5 represents the +Vin (pin 1) and -Vin (pin 2) pins.

J6 represents the +Vout (pin 1) and -Vout (pin 2) pins.

C1 is as described in the previous circuit; C1+ connects to J1 Pin 1, through to pin 2 of FL1 (left side top inductor), a phase dot is shown here.

FL1 pin 3 (right side top inductor) connects to C2+ through to +Vin on the NID100.

J5 pin 2 connects to C1-, through to pin 1 of FL1 (left side, bottom inductor), a phase dot is shown here.

FL1 pin 4 connects to C2- through to GND, to C3- and out to J6 pin 2.

NID100 Vout connects to C3+ through to J6 pin 1.

This Tiny Washington Town Has Metal Dogs, a Fish Statue, and a Sense of Humor
Facebook15PinterestWhatsAppShare 15 SHARES There’s a tiny spot in southwest Washington where the sidewalks are lined with metal sculptures and unusual artwork pops up all around town. This place is full of surprises and the kind of charm that’ll make you smile. You won’t find big crowds or flashy attractions here but you will find offbeat art, a museum full of old-timey carriages, and plenty of weird things scattered around. Curious yet? Keep reading because this little Washington town is way weirder than you’d ever expect. ## **Where Is It?** Raymond is a small town in southwest Washington, right along the scenic Highway 101. It’s a little over 2 hours southwest of Seattle and around 2 hours and 20 minutes from Portland, Oregon, making it an easy day trip if you’re cruising the coast. You’ll find it located between Willapa Bay and the forested hills of Pacific County, around 20 minutes north of Long Beach. If you’re road-tripping the Olympic Peninsula, Raymond is a fun little stop you won’t want to miss. ## **About** Google Maps Raymond, Washington is one of those blink-and-you-might-miss-it towns— _unless_ you happen to spot a herd of life-sized metal elk crossing the street. Yep, you read that right. This tiny town is best known for its unique outdoor art, especially the dozens (and dozens) of welded metal sculptures scattered along Highway 101 and throughout the town. These aren’t just random pieces either. The whole setup is called the Wildlife Heritage Sculpture Corridor, and it’s one of the most unexpected things you’ll stumble upon in Washington. We’re talking steel bears, fishermen, dogs, and a variety of wildlife and human sculptures. Google Maps The sculptures are made by local artists and volunteers and have become kind of a local trademark. You’ll see them perched along sidewalks, in front of businesses, and in parks or along the highway. But Raymond isn’t _just_ about its metal wildlife. It’s also got small-town charm, a logging and fishing history that goes way back to the early 1900s, and a deep connection to the natural world around it. The town sits along the Willapa River, surrounded by forests, wetlands, and some of the most peaceful backroads you’ll find in Washington. Google Maps Expect a super relaxed pace, friendly folks, and a town that doesn’t take itself too seriously especially when it comes to its art. ## **Things To Do In Raymond** Okay, so once you’ve stopped pointing at all the metal dogs and jazz-playing silhouettes, what else is there to do in Raymond? Surprisingly, a lot. Google Maps Start with the Northwest Carriage Museum, which is way cooler than it sounds. This place has over 60 antique carriages, buggies, and wagons from the 1800s, including ones used in old movies and shows. They’ve got everything from fancy Victorian carriages to mail wagons, plus a bunch of hands-on exhibits where you can hop in a buggy or take a look at some old tools. It’s fun, super well done, and the kind of museum that’s actually worth spending time in (even if you don’t care about carriages yet, you will by the end). Right next door is the Raymond Theatre, a charming 1928 building that still hosts plays, live music, and movie nights. > View this post on Instagram > > A post shared by Ɍαϲհεℓ Ŋεհẜ (@rachelnehf) If you’re in town during an event, it’s worth checking out as there’s something extra fun about catching a show in a vintage theater that still looks like it did decades ago. Want to stretch your legs a bit? Head to Willapa Hills Trail, which passes right through Raymond and connects all the way from Chehalis to South Bend. It’s a flat, easy trail that’s perfect for walking, biking, or just wandering and watching for herons along the river. > View this post on Instagram > > A post shared by Laney Clark (@silentgoddess) From Raymond, you can also do a chill out-and-back walk with great views of the Willapa River and forested hills. Into local history? The Pacific County Historical Society Museum, located in nearby South Bend, is a quick stop packed with vintage logging gear, old photographs, and stories from Raymond’s boom days as a lumber town. Need a snack break? > View this post on Instagram > > A post shared by C&C Classic Diner (@classicdiner124) Check out C&C Classic Diner, a retro spot with milkshakes and big ol’ burgers, or Hungry Heifer for homemade hash browns. If you’re after something stronger, the Wild Man Brewing Company has local craft beer and a relaxed, cozy vibe. Whether you’re here for the art, the trails, the offbeat museums, or just a fun roadside stop, Raymond delivers way more than you’d expect from a town with few stoplights. ## **Know Before You Go** Raymond is one of those places that’s great year-round, but if you want the best experience (aka no rain in your shoes), aim for late spring through early fall. June through August usually brings the driest, most comfortable weather, which is perfect for walking around town and spotting all the outdoor sculptures without a soggy hoodie. Google Maps Summer is also when you’ll catch local events like Raymond’s Willapa Harbor Festival—think parades, food vendors, and small-town fun. Getting there is pretty simple. If you’re coming from Olympia or Seattle, hop on Highway 101 and cruise west for a little over an hour. From Portland, it’s about 2 hours and 20 minutes—just head north on I-5, then west at Longview toward the coast. If you’re road-tripping the Olympic Peninsula, Raymond makes an awesome pit stop between Aberdeen and Long Beach. Parking is generally available at local motels and some businesses, and since the town is small, you can walk to most places once you’re there. Google Maps Heads up: There aren’t any big chain hotels in town, but you’ll find a few cozy motels like the Golden Lion or Pitchwood Inn. If you’re into camping, check out Bruceport County Park just 20 minutes away—it’s right on the water with forested sites and epic sunset views over Willapa Bay. Oh, and bring your camera or phone with plenty of storage. Between the sculptures, river views, and random roadside oddities, you’re gonna want a lot of pictures. Cell service is decent in town, but can get spotty on nearby backroads which is just something to know if you’re planning to wander. And lastly: don’t rush it. Raymond might be small, but it’s full of weird, wonderful surprises if you take your time and look around. * * * Related Posts The Oldest Tavern in Washington Has Been Pouring Drinks Since 1889 The Washington Library That Looks Like Hogwarts Facebook15PinterestWhatsAppShare 15 SHARES

In Texas, the State is removing climate change courses from the core curriculum. They have decided that climate change is just too dangerous to teach the students. This is indoctrination. I wrote an oped about it in the SA Express-News. Gift link: www.expressnews.com/opinion/comm...

Texas can’t hide from climate change by stopping students from learning about it
Texas has removed climate change courses from core curriculum at public universities. Ignoring climate change will not serve the state.

If you want to understand just how pathetic the clean energy is on politics, read this excellent piece in @washingtonmonthly.bsky.social. There are like a half-dozen quotes in here that make me want to jump off a fucking roof.

Why Won’t the Clean Energy Industry Play Dirty?
After Republican attacks, why does the industry still spend so little on elections?

A view from just above a whole lot of goats happily squeezed into a tiny horse trailer. Several of the goats are happily munching on apples. And next to the happily munching goats is a slightly confused looking yellowish dog.
