Her innocuous tweet on the night of Dec 31, 2019 was the one I randomly saw & everything in me screamed PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. Thank you. Helen. Your words saved many.💕
Hopefully this is nothing out of the ordinary. But a @ProMED_mail posting about "unexplained pneumonias" in China is giving me #SARS flashbacks.

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

Last week, Smith posted on social media that “For every $1 of taxes a guest worker generates, taxpayers are covering $10 in services.” While this figure might ring true for many, it is far from accurate. I fact-checked Smith’s claims in my latest for @thetyee.ca

All that the referendum questions on immigration do is ask Albertans whether they want to make the lives of migrants more precarious, punish them for using existing federal programs. Do you?

Wanna visit? Show your plane tickets, accommodation resos and travel itineraries. If you’re visiting a family member in Canada, they have to write you an invitation letter. Wanna stay longer? Get a study or work permit — neither of which are free, btw — and pay taxes.

It hadn’t occurred to me that one of the reasons Canadians in general, and Albertans in particular, have come to believe that moving here from abroad is easy, is that all they need to do to move to say, Mexico, for six months is buy a plane ticket. No questions asked.

The purpose of academic freedom is not to protect an individual's intellectual autonomy, ie, to believe whatever you want. That's the purpose of freedom of speech. The purpose of academic freedom is to enable a collective good, the pursuit of socially useful knowledge.

That goal means academic freedom has both epistemic and ethical implications. Epistemically, scholars need to do things like produce evidence, make arguments, and respond to critiques of their work. Insofar as someone fails to do this, their work does not enjoy the protections of academic freedom.

Ethically, scholars have a responsibility not to harm people with their research. Ethics review isn't an infringement of your academic freedom. It's ensuring that the benefits we expect to gain from this new knowledge are worth the risks to the participants.

"Low-emission zones," where car traffic is restricted, save lives -- especially the lives of children. The empirical evidence is unambiguous. But every attempt to create a new one is met by hysterical opposition filled with lies, because our societies are collectively poisoned by car-brain.

London’s low emission zone is working – so why are cities around the world so cautious about clean air?
Similar initiatives have been launched from Barcelona to Bogotá, but they have misinformation, political pressure and vested interests stacked against them

Also, a higher number of recalls might not indicate more contaminated products. It could mean more enforcement or more company testing of the same universe of bad products. It’s hard to fully understand what is happening with the information that’s available.

Surprising fact: We are actually NOT seeing more food recalls this year compared with recent years. What we’re seeing is an increase in the number of illnesses caused by contaminated food. This is the largest ever cyclospora outbreak & third-largest foodborne illness outbreak of any kind on record.
Number of food recalls by year
There have been 162 food recalls posted this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture.

Chart shows yearly food recall numbers from 2017 to 2026.

there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.
